22/04/10 03:49 PM22/04/10 03:49 PM #1 Is the haltech interceptor piggy back ecu any good for tuning xr6 turbos.I was offered one the other week for a certain price with a tune for a manual xr6 turbo still on it.But I only really know of people using the xcal flash tuners on xr6 turbos, so are these haltech piggy back ecu's any good?
22/04/10 09:24 PM22/04/10 09:24 PM #2 Wouldn't bother mate, just get an X2 or X3 off ebay and get it tuned. There's a lot of really high HP cars around that are still running the factory ECU.
23/04/10 12:35 AM23/04/10 12:35 AM #3 haltech make a decent product but a piggyback or stand alone ECU is not needed for the majority of builds, maybe 1% of us will go beyond the capabilities of a flashed standard ECU. Most of the cars running a piggyback would have been done before the xcal boxes became popular or their tuner doesnt know about them. Also youd want to get the tune touched up for your car anyway.Get a flash tuner and see a reputable ford tuner like our site sponsors and you'll get the best result without adding any extra electronics or stressing about wiring.
23/04/10 12:36 AM23/04/10 12:36 AM #4 Author yeh I was thinking x2 or x3 wen I eventually got a tune done but just thought its all ready tuned for 9spi for an 03 ba xr6t manual which is exactly wat mine is so thought itd be good to be able straight plug it in and all ready have a tune that's gotta be safer than a generic capa tune that comes with sct tuners. Like I know id have to get the haltech re tuned as each car is slightly different so id still need a custom tune done for my car but are these piggy back ecu's not really a good choice for these cars?
23/04/10 04:14 AM23/04/10 04:14 AM #5 It will still be as dangerous, if not more than a generic CAPA tune as your cars will differ. Don't bother with the Haltech, just use a flash box.
23/04/10 08:08 AM23/04/10 08:08 AM #6 Author ohk thanks, I didnt think theyd be that different as both ba xr6 turbos with 5spd manual but ill take your advice.Just seemed like good deal but I think ill wait bit longer and get an x2 or x3 and custom tune or a T56 gearbox, wat ever one I do first
23/04/10 08:14 AM23/04/10 08:14 AM #7 Not so much about being not a "good choice", they do the job, but why add extra hardware that isn't necessary? It's just another thing to have some sort of failure. If you do go down this path, make sure your tuner fits it for you and retunes it to suit your car. Even though it was on a falcon before, it may not have the same ECU codes and could damage your engine.Cheers,Ben
24/04/10 09:24 AM24/04/10 09:24 AM #8 Author thanks for the advice ben, ive decided to pass on the haltech ecu and am just gonna keep saving towards a T56 swap or x3 flash tuner and tune
