I use to use optimax but have since changed to BP Ultimate due to the fact that optimax has been known for fouling plugs and being very sooty. Performance I don't think there's any difference between Optimax, Ultimate or Synergy 8000 but some people believe there is.

Well why we are talking about PULP can someone tell me octane rating of all the brands.

As far as I am aware all the leading brands are 98RON:-

Optimax, S8000, & Ultimate.

Not sure about Caltex vortex?

Optimax mostly, but I'll use BP Ultimate if Shell has run out of stock.

Having said that, I found in the previous car (running much higher boost) that even the PULP brands seem to have fluctuations in the octane rating and hence variations in power.

My car is only new so it's still running standard oil.

The 'what brand of fuel is best' discussion has raised its head again....

I am staying out of it this time.

What I will say is that when on the west coast of tassie last February, I was forced to fill up with standard ULP from a pretty dodgy looking servo, and she still managed to put 600Km in before I filled up. No noticable lack in performance, including overtaking a line of 4 semitrailers in one go. No complaints about the pick-up. Obviously PULP will give you better peak performance numbers, and is safer for the engine under hi-po conditions (ie track or dyno) but on the road I doubt most would spot a huge difference.

Saying that, I only fill with Optimax/Mobil8000/BPUltimate, because it is widely available where I am, and you are pretty much gauranteed a quality fuel.

I think the most important thing is to fill from very busy service station. If they have a large turnover of fuel, you are getting the freshest juice in the tank. This will have more of an impact than which brand is better.

Can anyone tell me if they sell 98 Octane Premium in Launceston? My wife is living down there at the moment and she tells me that she can't find Optimax (she was told Shell don't sell it in Tas) BP Ultimate or Mobil Synergy 8000.

Help would be good, I don't like running 95 or less in the Alfa.

I couldnt find any 98 when I was there in Feb. Even in Hobart the best I could find was 95 Shell or BP. I think we have some Hobart locals on board who may be able to add to this.
