Driving along a main road today when some jerk cut me off, I floored it (in drive) it kicked down and launched like a rocket like never before then all of a sudden

a big puff of sandy brown coloured smoke came out the back and it started running rough.

I pulled over in a side street and check everything out under the bonnet... no obvious signs of any problems.

Started her back up, no problem with idle or anything so I took off.

Now when I put my foot down and the boost winds all the way up it blows a little bit of this sandy brown smoke comes out. It is coated on the inside of the exhaust tip also.

What has happened?

Yesterday I cleaned the boost solinoid with some RP7, I let it idle for 5 mins and took it for a hard drive. No problems at all it worked great.

I've got a pod filter on in place of the airbox, bov removed and the car is flashed tuned to 10psi. The car was already tuned when I bought it but I suspect that it is a generic tune from capa.

One other thing is that under hard throttle it reaches the end of 3rd gear and seems to hit a flat spot and stops pulling. Not sure if these things are connected.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ive never heard of brown smoke... just black, blue and white..

how do you mean sandy?

All smoke is either oil, fuel, coolant, or some part of the engine/turbo/exhaust, so maybe your catalytic converter?

sounds weird to me dude.

I would be inclinded to believe it is overboosting and when the limp mode kicks in it is unburnt fuel you are seeing.

From the rear view mirror ruch smoke looks brown, when from behind the car it is black.

lubing up the BC has most likely brough the car back to its full potential and in conjunction with the pod has now caused the overboost problem.

Get it custom tuned and it should solve your problem.

by sandy I'm just trying to describe the colour of it.

there is brown residue sitting in the exhaust tip, slimey to touch.

custom tune is definitely on the cards.

Chances are you are overboosting bad, and leaning out like crazy. I have had the same flat spot in third once, I was running a c&v generic 10psi tune on a freezing cold night. Full throttle saw it register 16psi at the top of third and the ECU shut it down, jumped out of the bonnet, broke my right ankle and punched me in the face.

I now keep it on 8psi until I can get a custom tune sorted.

Take yours to a tuning shop and get them to have a look, it doesnt sound healthy...

I don't like the fact that it keeps doing it and that slimy brown residue in the exhaust is not a good sign. Hope it's not oil.

If it is it's probably your turbo or maybe even engine. But my money is on the hardware and not the tune, tune is probably what caused it.
