But we still need to know what you did wrong (or are about to do) that prompted the hunt for brownie points, hence the extra attention to her car? :beerchug:

No worries mate, glad the sun is shining all round.

3M 1800 is finer and more controlled than a cutting compound on the end of a buff on the end of a I am not so sure what I am doing.

But everyone has an opinion and that's kewl.

Ford now uses LP1C ( low pressure one coat ) There is less over spray and more gets on the panel. Great, well yes if it's hand rubbed between coats.

They use to use HP2C High pressure two coats. More paint, well everywhere. but on the panels. but it sets better.

Mate you can skip the wet and dry, even the buff for that matter. Just get the Farecla G3 and hand rub it. Same thing, just have an atomizer handy and keep wetting it down till it's almost gone. Use a small application sponge. One comes with the maguires gold and I use that to protect my car after I polish it. You wont get rid of all the orange peel, but the Farecla is also a filler so it gets compleately rid of swirls and small defects in the paint, yes even by hand.

You can go to my msn page bwlaird@msn.com I have about thirty photo's on there of the car std to well buffed and polished and even in the photo's u can tell the dif. Its really worth it. Specially on a new baby. I just have to have it perfect.

I see you live in Bris how much beer do you have and whats you wife look like LOL sorry ha ha single and loving it

I feel sorry for the cars you buff then.

Yes you do NEED to clay the car first. Whats your polish of choice?

When you say you keep it polished I assume you mean chemically polished with some sort of synthetic as abrasive polishing will do nothing to protect the paint.

You do need to have either a wax or sealant on the car at all times for protect from the things mentioned above.

you can say that you NEED to clay a car first, but its not true... if I am buffing a car I will use the farecla g3 (which laird mentioned). as for polishing I just use turtle wax ice polish at the moment because its cheap, and seems to do a pretty good job. there are a whole lot of products available which will do a much better job, but at the end of the day, I drive the car day in, day out and its no show car...

now when it comes to maintaining a pristine paintjob, YES I would recommend using a claybar first, and YES I would use different products. PPG had a fantastic polishing kit called system 1 and it is used in stages, the final finish will be good enough for ANY inspection if it is done correctly.

I have been working on cars, for quite some time, and I know the difference between what is NEEDED and what isn't, I have built from ground up, award winning show cars, and I have also detailed these cars prior to them leaving the workshop only to take out awards for best paint, and so on..

now you can feel sorry for those cars all you like but the fact is that I know what I'm talking about and I answered the question which was asked, which was NOT how do I turn my wifes car into a show car, but how do I get it looking good again....

I HIGHLY recommend NOT wetsanding unless you know exactly what your doing. It will take seconds to ruin a paint job. At the bare minimum you will need a paint thickness gauge so you know how much paint you have left and how much you are taking off. Sanding a car down is not something that you should do just cause over a weekend.

yep true and I hear what your saying.

He did say its four years old and a suzuki and never been polished. And I bet my left nut she has had the garage well till now.

If you are light and just let the paper do the work and have your mighty atomizer in the other hand....... they love a good rubbing like your old labrador.

I think I did say or should have said it was an optional part of the process. I guess I should finish it but no one really seems to care lol

I would like to have mine xrayed by dupont. Expecially under the bonnet and boot as well as the engine bay. Pitty there is no industry std only what they can get away with.

and we wonder why the pollies take ten years to get anything through parliment :)

Mate I am just a novice with a close friend who is strait up, and owns a paint and panel shop.

I took my car back to Ford for the peel and they didn't care. they agreed it was bad and blamed the colour. :(

So I took it to marty and well he knew I had the ability and we did the rear bumper together and then I went home and did the rest of the car myself. It took a week and I used it every day in between as it's my company car. It is worth it and forget the sandpaper. you need to get to the base coat to get all the crap peel out anyway, but go real easy with the buff, and I am talking of your car. Mask up all the sharp edges and every bit of rubber, Or even just 3 or 4 hand rubs with the g3. It's worth it. Mine is nine months old by the way. And I did it at 6 months old. And it still looks perfect. Except where someone opened there door into mine yesterday. :(

Have you got much Paint in your engine bay? or under the boot and bonet lid?
