Ba Turbo Needs Replacing.

Hi to all.

My brother has a BA XR6T which needs the turbo to be replaced. The bearings are noisy.... It only has 70,000 k's on it!! It has a custom tune on it with 248rwkw. Boost is 10psi which drops off to 9.5psi right at the top end.I had the tune done 3 years ago as it used to be mine. Is this common??? I haven't heard too many reports of problems.....My brother's pissed because it's going to cost about $2000 to replace. He's worried that something else major will go wrong!! Is it dangerous to keep driving it this week??

Is $2000 about right to change the turbo??

Cheers.

Doug

When is it noisy??? On shutdown or under load.

When you shut it down you can hear the turbine spinning and it sounds like noisy bearings. We had to switch back to the factory tune is it wasn't boosting under load. He's just been driving it on really light throttle.

thanks.

Doug.

Can't really do too much damage to anything else apart from the turbo itself. 2K sounds like a good price for a replacement, does that include remove/replace?

Theres nothing wrong with the other 1000's of turbos out there, it is quite normal that you can hear the turbo on shutdown.

seen turbo's fail in the bearings due to lack of oil changes, continuing to drive them can cause wear in other components that are not necessarily damaged at the first indication of something being wrong.

The price quoted is quite good.

Can you here scraping or rattling when on the gas and have you checked how much play their is in the shaft bearings. Also have you made sure your getting oil supply to the turbo. As said above all of these turbos seem to have noise on shutdown and sometimes its louder than others. Do the usual checks first and maybe get a second opinion before you fork out 2g for a replacement.
