Hey ppls. Im looking at buying a ute at the moment and I thought id just pick a few brains as to how strong the gearbox's are in BA XR6T's from experience and such. I ask because the ute im looking at has a pretty hardcore clutch in it and im curious to know if the box will hack it, I dont know exactly what the clutch is I cant remember but just take hardcore as gosple.

Cheers.

The first thing to ask is it a 5 or 6 speed

If you have a 6 speed it will take almost any thing you can throw at it, the 5 speed manual is a hand grenade and likely to blow at any power

yeah its a 5 speed, it has a cromolly fly wheel to counteract the factory problem with the fly wheels does this make any difference to my initial post?

the ute runs standard boost and has no other mods, im just worried about the f**k off clutch lol.

Stay away from the 5 speeds if possible... They like to blow even at stock power levels with some spirited driving! :outahere:

The aftermarket clutch wont help either...

Up your budget a little if possible & go for a BA Mk II with 6 speed manual or a BF Mk I with 6 speed auto. Both are far superior to BA Mk I with 5 speed

okay, lets just say I could get this ute cheap how much am I looking (guesstimation) at a mk2 box or even a tornado box, unless they are the same box haaha, sorry im new to this. I need to up my ford knowledge.

They are the same box (T56) and you can pick up a new conversion from Mal Woods Auto (Site advertiser) for around $6k with a good clutch. I just sold a complete conversion with AP Racing twin plate clutch for $3k + a ratty old T5 so there is deals to be had if you're lucky enough to stumble across them...

How cheap is this ute?

round 16 its my dads mates ute, but im just not sure what to do ay. im getting jumpy cos I want a ute so baldy and there is f**k all for sale right now, ov been waiting for yonks lol but yeah thought id see what the forums had to say first.

50,000km isn't bad for an 03 & if they've been relatively easy km's it isn't a bad buy! Just budget for a box swap if you plan on mods

If I were you I'd just save a little more & get a low km BA Mk II or higher km BF Mk I. You'll end up with a much better base to start with, have a newer car & roughly the same sort of kms. Some ex chaser BF Mk I's are going for $17 - $18k as well so might be worth a look on Fowles Auctions website??
