Some experts say it is required while others say it isn't.If you are wanting to do it just for the sound then have a look at previous topics in this forum, quite a few have how-to's and videos posted up. If you are looking for a definitive answer to whether it is required or will harm your turbo etc. then prepare yourself for some disappointment!

Get some popcorn, a comfy couch, throw the laptop on your lap and start reading. After 3-4 days of non-stop reading, you should be even more confused. People do it without problems. People do it and have problems. Some say it's fine. Others say it's dangerous. Some like the noise. Most think it's unnecessary and pointless. As you won't get a definitive answer, just have a think about what's important to you. Looking sik to muzzas (and stupid to the general public), or err'ing on the side of caution and leaving your beast alone. You can tell which way I lean, but each to their own. I've toyed with the idea of doing it for sh*ts and giggles, but only as a temporary laugh for the boys at work. Was a bit too much work just to make those pricks laugh, so I left it. Good luck mate!

The bov vents the built up pressure caused when the throttle butterfly is suddenly closed when the car is under boost and the turbo is still producing boost. By venting the excess boost you greatly reduce the back pessure on the compresser wheel and the bearing. When some of the jap cars start running ultra high boost I have seen one(30psi) butterfly bent a little by the back boost and a bov not working. It might not seem much at the time but under a few years of excessive back pressure this will cause seals and the turbo to fail befor it's time. You can just vent the bov back to atmo if you want or even try a filter on the end of the crossover it might give you that wank sound you are after.
