Keyless Entry Range

Featured Replies

Hi,

Has anyone else noticed that the rage on the keyless entry for the XRT (and other BA Flacons I would assume) seams to be quite long?

I was walking down the street approaching my car today and thought I would see if I could un-lock the car when I was about 30m away. Low and behold the bloody thing flashed at me and unlocked  !

I thought that car manufacturers deliberately gave these things a low power and range (ie less than 10m). I thought they did this so that if you lost your keys (say in a shopping centre) someone else couldn’t ‘find’ your car by trolling the car park while pressing the keyless entry.

I haven’t actually bothered to see what the maximum range is.

Anyone got any comments?

Yeah, I've noticed it too.

I think it's great. When I see someone checking out my car I let them look for a while, then hit the panic button. Scares the crap outta them. Great fun.

Yeah I did that once too!

I was at work when I noticed 3 girls (18-19yrs old and very attractive too) standing beside my car and 2 guys taking a photo of the them with my car, so I decided to press the panic button and from a standing start they jumped at least 2 metres and bolted.

It was bloody funny!

I've noticed that the keypad works from long distances too. I reckon it's great.

I was at a family even the other day and there was an XR6 owner who was there.

His car was parked two houses down in his full brick garage, and he wanted to see if his panic button would activate on my car.

His car went off.

I found this interesting though, he could lock my car with his set of keys but not with the remote.

l am not 100% sure on this, but l think the 'tibble' keys are all the same. All the security verification is done by the smartlock coding, so his key would lock your car but not unlock it. His key would no doubt fit in your ignition too, but it wouldnt start your beast.

Your spot on there Mondie.

We tried that as well.

He told me all AU and BA keys are exactly the same. But it is the smart lock coding that decides if its the right key or not.

You can actually buy a new key and "train" it to work your car, at a later date you can then disable the key, it's all in the handbook. Pretty cool stuff.

Long shot hereI would have thought, but just picking up on a couple of comments and seeking clarification.

I have a third remote and key for my EL Fairmont, are you suggesting that when I go XR6T, there is a chance that the new model will be able to use that key and/or remote ?

Had to arrange to get my car locked up with the keys inside because I wasn't going to get to pick it up before the dealer shut up this evening. The service guy said the same hing- well just use one of the other "tibble" keys to lock it up. Now I know what he was on about.
