At the moment I've got an EF with a single straight through muffler and a huge cam (among other mods) so it's loud and rough, which I like but it's not good for long trips. So she's making me sell it... I won't be going all out with mods on the T, but I'll have to atleast make it faster than my EF So, can you sucessfully free up the exhaust system while keeping it quiet ? And if so has anyone got any recommendations for off the shelf or easily obtained systems ?Cheers

The turbo muffles some of the exhaust sound ?I thought the exhaust is usually one of the first things you do, but if you can get up around 300rwkw then that's pretty good! 30/04/07 05:29 AM30/04/07 05:29 AM #4 the exhaust is first in most turbo cars but the factory one is pretty good (for a stocker) , the main problem with it is not the exhaust but the cat. most people fit a larger cat if they want to retain the factory exhaust and do things like the fuel system and intercooler first.

The turbo muffles some of the exhaust sound ?Definitely.I used to go to the F1's when they were in Adelaide. The increase in noise level between '88 to '89 when the turbos were dropped was amazing (as was watching Senna drive that black Lotus).Even if you put extractors on the turbo you still won't get the same sound of a good na.However, with extractors, big exhaust, bigger turbo and high revs you can definitely make a lot of noise.... yet very different to a V8.Brian

02/05/07 04:38 AM02/05/07 04:38 AM #8 Hyena, there's some good advice in there. As has been said, the stock exhaust system on these cars is very good considering it's a factory job. They'll happily support high 200rwkws, although you'd probably get efficiency gains by freeing it up a little. Again, if you want to spend as little as possible and retain a stock look, the best option is to replace the cat only - the 3.5" MetalCat is a good choice. Many others have also replaced the centre muffler, although this is very much more for noise than performance. If you do want a slightly throatier note without driving the missus mad, you could conisder replacing the centre muffler with twin hot dogs - this results in a note somewhat louder than stock, but without being too intrusive and with no droning (straight through pipes instead of hot dogs are more than likely to result in drone).I'm in a similar situation to you and, although I wanted a sportier note (but was adamant that it didn't drone or attract TOO much attention), my wife wanted a car that was quiet and looked standard. So I did the hot dog option and the wife is happy and the exhaust looks stock. I also have the 3.5" MetalCat and, with a number of other mods, am quite easily producing 308rwkw. Hope that was of some help mate. Good luck with the T, and rest assured, you won't have to do too much at all (if anything! ) to make it considerably quicker than your old EF!!
