I had the auto lights on module (or whatever) fitted today 'cause the wife left the lights ON and flattened the battery. Thought that it may save some future grief. It has me a bit confused though. It is not like the Auto lights on that is factory fitted and is detailed in the hand book.

As far as I can tell so far, now the lights always come ON when the car is started if the lights are in the OFF position, however, the dash is not illuminated unless you turn the light switch to park (and then only the parkers are on) or ON. It also seems that if you turn the lights ON normally they stay on when you turn the car OFF...which is exactly what I did not want... Being used to the VT I expected this "upgrade" to act the same way I.e. turn the lights OFF when the ignition was turned off. I have not worked out if you can actually turn the lights off any more without having to turn the ignition OFF

Anyone else had this done and/or know what it is supposed to do?

BTW They seem to have reset the trip computer as well.....not sure why they would need to do that

Hi Dave,

While l dont have the always on feature you just have had fitted, the way you describe it is the way l understand it works. This is a feature that l had recently on the rental car during my trip to the USA and there was no way to turn the lights off. Seems to be a common feature over there.

Not sure if you left the light switch in the on position whether the lights still switched off though. Does you car have an audible alarm when the lights are left on with the engine off?

Dave,

Unfortunately, that's how it is supposed to work.

It is an Auto-"ON" function.

Made mainly for Telstra and Government cars etc.

It will not turn the lights off if they are turned on manually. I think only the Ghias have the auto light feature that turn the lights on and off with ambient light.

I have the audible alarm and the lights donot switch off in the ON mode when I kill the engine

That sucks...so wasted $140.00 and I WILL remove it. GUess I should have asked more questiond before I ordered it....oh well life goes ON

Just read the details on the Ghia auto on/off light system, it's in the owner's manual on page 89.

Thanks I will re read the manual and see where I may have gone wrong.

This is from the Ford web site:

Headlights automatically turn on when the vehicle is started and turn off when the vehicle is shut down

Integrated with the electronic system

Improves visibility of the vehicle to other traffic

The normal vehicle headlights and taillights override this feature when switched on

So I guess I got what I paid for even if it wasn't what I expected. :( :(

Dave, if you want to bypass your light switch so your wife can't accidently leave them on, even though there is an audible allarm to warn her, it is easy enough to do so with a relay wired from the accessory position or ignition positon of your key.

Personally I would be happy with the way it has been set up for you by the dealer - just give your wife CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS to NOT TURN ON THE LIGHT SWITCH except after dark ... LOL

PS - for less than $140 you could probably get a new wife heheheh.

CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS to your wife... I let go of that fantasy with my wife a long time ago

I get, "bye, I'm going up the road..... yeah, yeah, whatever, I know, don't drive fast, watch the front spoiler, and ......remember to turn the lights off"
