Service Help - How Much & What Type Of Oil

Hi guys,

I'm going to do some servicing on my car (03 BA XR6 Turbo Sedan). Going to drop oil, replace filter, top up power steering fluid and coolant and also replace fan belt (looks a bit frayed).

Can someone tell me how much oil I will need and what type I should use. I think ford use valvoline synthetic, but I'd like to know what your thoughts are?

Ford dealers use all different brands of oil.

Oil type will depend on your driving style and expected engine temps etc. I use Castrol Magnatec 10W40 which is within Ford specifications and has served me well for the last two years including a track day.

If you constantly give your car a good sustained workout you should opt for a heavier oil such as a 10W50 or 10W60 and start looking at synthetics as well.

At our dealer, we use castrol 15w40, in all the turbo's, I we also stock the castrol edge as well, And I highly recommend it, even at the next service, the oil quality still looks good, considering the long service interval that ford has for the ba.

I use the Castrol as well. My XR6T is also 03 auto.

The dealer suggested it after my fisrt service and have used it ever since.

My car has done a lot of highway driving and have never had a problem.

As for the other items on your list, not sure mine is still under factory warranty so haven't looked into those yet.

Would be interested to hear what others are doing.

Start off with 6.0L if your doin engine oil and filter, start and run it to fill the filter, then top up, should take around 6.3-6.7L all up. The ford power steering pumps are a bit testy in the Ba's, buy a litre of fluid from your dealer, when you top up the fluid in the power steering only open the reserviour when the car is stone cold, if you open it up when its warm/ hot, you can introduce air into the pump and then you will get a shudder. Some cars get it and some cars dont, not sure why. If you do, cause your replacing the belt anyway, cycle the pump manually for 2 mins anti clockwise, then 2 mins clockwise, or until air bubbles stop rising from the reserviour. Also check and make sure that the High pressure hose isn't leaking or the fitting, as there is a revised hose available. If the o ring is leaking you can replace just the fitting, buts its a bastard cause there is an internal circlip that connects to the hose, you have to cut the fitting down then crack it bla bla bla, bottom line, if its leaking pm me and I can give you detail intructions, but be prepared to replace the hose. they are about 230 odd dollars from memory.

that hose off the resivour shat it on my car.

under my bonnet is clean as a whistle, when lubing the wastegate solenoid I had oil up my arm and I was like WTF!! checked the area, and that connection to the steering resivour was wobbly and loose. ford replaced it and its still got a tiny bit of movement but its not leaking.

ive checked all my mates BA's aswell and they ALL have wobbly hoses to the power steering! one thing to keep an eye on guys if your levels are dropping constantly...
