ZF 6 speed trans, using it in manual mode, shifts up and down gears fine. As you coast to a stop it downshifts automatically all the way to 2nd. When you come to a complete stop, it remains in 2nd, it does not downshift to 1st unless you manually do so. Should it?,...... dealer says no, to me it is not logical! Why would you want to take off in 2nd? If it is in Performance mode or adaptive mode, it downshifts to 1st when you come to a stop.

In the owner's manual, under the heading Manual Mode, it states:

If stationary, 1st gear will be automatically selected

However, a couple of paras later it states:

If when driving in manual mode and coasting to a stop, the transmission will downshift to 2nd gear.

Confused....

Yes my brothers 6 speed auto also stays in second unless you manually select first. Not sure the reason for this

Yeah, but I would expect it to change to 1st automatically when you come to a complete standstill

That is normal operation and it will only shift to first when the percentage of throttle position reaches a certain percent at which time it will downshift to first.

mine also stays in second.

When taking off in normal/perf mode it will also take off in 2nd unless you use more than 1/2 throttle.

I think it is for a smooth take off as 1st is very low geared.

I think your dealer is right and it is "normal" for once.....

Even if I give it a bootful, it stays in 2nd. Seems the owner manual is poorly written.

Yes, 1st gear is low however, to me, given that I have already selected performance mode and then manually selected a gear, it should indicate that I am a ratbag and expect best torque upon takeoff. If you are driving around in sluggo mode (Adaptive mode), it takes off in 1st. It just doesn't seem logical.

Can edit do anything about this? I have only ever had a unijip, not played with edit.
