Ip Home Telephone

Hey Guys,

Building a new house this year and am keen to move away from the traditional phone line and associated high call and rental charges.

I will definately have high-speed internet and want to investigate an IP solution for my home phone. Anyone have any experience with this?

One company that is advertising VOIP for the home is engin but cant say I have seen any others.

Any feedback or recommendations would be appreciated.

Luke.

I dont know about these at all.. but I use skype for all my phonecalls (works on internet)... I have a normal phone handset connected via usb port that looks eaxctly the same as a normal telephone... I speak to friends overseas and it cost not 1 cent... this is only free if the other end user also uses skype... if they dont you can use skype credit... I bought $10 dollars worth... with this you call the other persons home phone from your skype set up...an overseas call cost me the same as a local call here. so you can talk for hours for 20 cents or so.. I have only used it once as all my friends have skype so allmost all of my calls are free.

dont know if this is what you are looking for but its a great system.

That is the sort of thing I want. I will need a phone number and a handset, but want it to work over the internet rather than  Telstras lines.

yes they give you a phone number if you want it... cost is minute.. cant remember but its a very small cost to get a phonenumber.

they make money by selling handsets, phonenumbers and credit.... its very cheap to use.. in my case free

I believe that IPrimus have a deal that will give you broadband and VoIP with a land line number.

This would be the ONLY type of solution as you need a local phone number so non VoIP people can call you.

In 5 years most people will pay by the Megabyte for their phone calls rather than per call.

P.S I have nothing to do with IPrimus and do not have their services

I've been using VoIP for a few years now (saves heaps on international calls to the family back in the U.S.). I've got my own software based PABX set up which allows routing of calls (local, international, national, internet) the way I need them to be. What you're after more than likely would be an Engin like setup with the SPA-2000 unit they label as the Engin Voice Box.

The only draw back we all face is the fact we all still have to pay bloody line rental even though ADSL does not require it to operate.

yeah.. you want to avoid paying for line rental... no point in ip based phones if you still have line rental :stirthepot:
