New Clutch At 11,000 Kms ?

I have just purchased a 2nd hand XR6 Turbo in Sydney. Its 12 months old and I think it may need a new clutch in the near future (maybe had a hard life so far). Can anyone offer some advice about where to go (I live in the East) and how much its going to cost ? Other than the clutch the NRMA says the car is in good order.

If the car has had a hard time as you suggest and you want a new clutch under warranty, good luck. Nobody ever said ford dealers were mugs! A clutch is an item that is subject to wear and tear and in my opinion would not be covered by warranty unless there was a manufacturing defect. Probably hard to prove.

I expect that MOFOCO would do a clutch replacement for about $500 however, you still have a clutch that is barely up to the job in a stock car. I am having a Mal Woods clutch fitted today by Intune Motorsports at Castle Hill. This clutch is said to have about a 30% higher lock pressure plate than the standard POS. $995 fitted.

If yours lasted only 12000 km, that is a very short service life. Mine went at 70,000 km and is running 239 rwkw. Was yours thrashed or was it a woman driver?

Great, thanks for this. I dont know if it has had a hard life, I only bought it on Friday but the clutch stuck in on Sunday, I put my foot down (foot by now off the clutch pedal) and the car hardly moved. I stuck my foot back on the clutch and let it off again and we got underway but there was an almighty smell of burning clutch plates.

Basically the clutch was biting high anyway & now its worse. Could be a worn out clutch, could be a fault...

Surely there is some sort of warranty that came with the car ie. mechanical warranty for 3 months. Unless you drive like a woman, you would be hard pressed to burn out a clutch in 2 days.

My clutch was fine on takeoff however in 2nd or third gear on dry bitumen where wheelspin was not an option, you could hear the clutch slip under max accel. It would still light up the tyres in 1st rather than slip so it was not doing too bad. I do too many miles and could not afford to have it fail so I thought early replacement was the best option.

The car would be covered by the standard (ab)used car warranty for the first 3 months.

From what you say the problem may be more pedal/hydrolic related.

If you tried to dump the clutch at 4,000rpm the clutch will slip as they are "just" suitable for the power. High RPM launches are a big no no in these cars as the car will go nowhere.

Did you buy from a Ford dealer ?

XR8 clutch as supplied by ford is ~$1800. I can't imagine you would get much less than that for the XR6T.

If you get forced to pay for one, get an aftermarket job and at least have a decent clutch.

Thanks for all your help and advice... looks like its going back to the dealer for a look. I will go for an aftermarket model if I have to pay for a new one !
