OK, need help,

have standard pads & rotors with almost 40,000k on them (not sure if pads have been replaced at service time), and having a track day next weekend (9th july)

will I need to upgrade or will the brakes be good enough (first track day: not going to drive like a nun, but not going to drive like mark webber either).

if I need an upgrade, what should I get ? just new pads, or rotors and pads? havent got billions to spend and wont be making track days a regular occurence so dont want to spend ridiculous amounts for one track day.

budget $500-600 (although dont really want to spend this much)

any assistance appreciated!

Mate, you should see what I did to my brakes after a track day. They have all been replaced now with the performance PBR brakes – rotors, pads, callipers and high temp fluid. However, looking at your budget, this is not for you. May I suggest DBA cross slotted rotors and good pads and flush all the fluid for the highest boiling point fluid you can get your grubby little hands on – I used PBR fluid.

If you have standard brakes I hope you have a manual car...

I took it very hard on my first track day with auto and standard brakes. Well I had DBA 4000 rotors and Bendix Ultimate pads.

Pads were 6 weeks old and they were destroyed half way through the day.

Glazed over my rotors so much they needed two machine jobs.

Boiled the brake fluid

Destroyed the master cylinder

That was just after four hard laps...

Went to the track in my now manual XRT + premium brakes. 15 hard laps at a time and no hint of fade. I strongly recommend the PBR package (same as the Ford Premium Brakes).

ordered a set of DBA 400 series disks on the front, pbr pads and quality brake fluid to be fitted on monday. $660 all up. :spoton:

You have to appreciate that the car with driver will weigh up to 1800kgs, and can reach moderate speeds at the track. Given the combination of speed and weight you need some serious brake hardware to repeatedly pull up the car. Unfortunately, the standard brakes, whilst they may work ok on a 1000kg car, will die very quickly. There really isn't a cheap way out given these factors.
