June 28, 200521 yr #61 Just heard some info that the new auto gearbox will have a function called Winter Mode. This prevents the gearbox from changing up through the gears when the rear wheels have broken traction. From what I can understand the computer detects the speed of the front wheels and references them to the rears. This prevents the car from up shifting when wheels are rotating too fast for the vehicles overall speed.
June 28, 200521 yr #62 Actually I think it works the other way around - will upshft and not shift back down ...
June 28, 200521 yr #63 That's what the current range of European cars here with Auto's do.You turn "Winter" mode on and they take off in second, to avoid wheel spin..
June 28, 200521 yr #64 I wait fHmm, some interesting points, but ... noYou have torque. The torque curve is flat. As long as your gear ratios keep you within the flat torque curve it don't matter if you have 1 or 5 gears.Just look at top fuelers......they run 2 or 3 gears at most..... if there was an advantage, as you are suggesting, then they would run 7,8,9 or 10 speed boxes.Sorry for the "slap stick" but Wannabe Mechanical engineer might be right...I have the bit of paper and the design time with gearboxes and diffs......Sorry.Top fuel only have a cluch pack and are direct drivePro Stock have gears 5 or moreRob
