Steering Clunk-dealer Stumped

Hi all,

I've had my T in the dealer about 5 times now with a steering clunk that comes Intermittently through the steering. They have several other MKII T's with this problem.

Occurs over bumps (when the front suspension changes up and down with a turned wheel), or just turning the steering wheel when parking.

Has anyone else experienced a steering clunk and had it fixed? Or similar problem?

Any input would be appreciated. The dealer has rung Ford today and requested assistance for a fix.

Yeah... Its something there, its just the dealer has tried everything on it. Re-tensioning, tightening all bolts on the front of the car to tension... cant find anything and it still does it...

They should Know as it is a fairly common fault.

Yeah.... I had the steering clunk about 6 weeks ago.

Would sound like a mechanical knock as the steering was turned,

Something akin to an overtighted seized bearing or nut as you turn it.

Took it in for a non scheduled oil change and mentioned it to the service manager, so they tightened some bolts on the steering rack.

Clunk wasn't as noticeable for the first few days after, but reappeared.

Then I also noticed I had stiff turning to the left at idle... turning clockwise was OK, nut turning the steering wheel anti-clockwise felt like there was NO power assistance.

Took it back and they replaced the steering rack completely.

No problems so far..... good power assistance, and NO clunk!

I think theyre doing something with stainless steel washers, putting them between the steering rack and where it bolts onto....or something like that

I had the steering clunk. First they tightened the bolts but it did not fix it.

Then they dropped the steering box and then repositioned and retightened it and it went away.

Had a very similar problem, clunk when turning in to park car, clunk when going round corners and really pushing it. Eventually ford service found problem was loose nut on antiroll bar at front. Tightened nut, no further problems.

Sounds like the same crap my sh*tbox is doing! I've also noticed it driving into roundabouts slow and fast, u-turns.

Told the dealer about it a couple times and each time they told me I was hearing things. If complete car noobs alter me to the noise while in and outside of the car, I aint hearing things!

Rang dealer yesterday to sort out some other issues and got a new guy on the phone so thought I'd complain about the steering again. Guy straight away said, yeh there are some washers/shims or something like that, so we'll see how that goes. If they fix it, I'll report back

Cool thanks. My dealer was really good about it. They heard it straight away and have been "trying" ever since.
