What ya talkin about.. We have one (apart from the 200K bit between Albury and Yass) its called the Hume... If we did not have the dufus people who sit in the right hand lane doing 95km/h we would all be fine.

Large displacement engines generally don't need more than three or four well spaced ratios. However the world is changing, even for us Aussies. Smaller displacement engines are taking over because of concerns regarding fuel efficiency. They rev higher and have a smaller power band. To achieve anywhere near the same accelleration as the "old" motors they have to have more gear steps.However you're comments regarding overtaking in top gear are a bit off the mark. I hear it stated very often that the six speed manual in the Commodes is useless. Simply not true. Top gear is for cruising economy and quietness - it is not meant to be a "usable" gear for all modes of driving. People who don't want to shift their manual from overdrive in order to overtake should be driving an auto!The govt can build as many autobahns as they like - it will just mean more lanes for the slow drivers to block up. We need the police to do their job and blitz the morons driving in the right lane when the left is available.
