03/02/08 01:06 AM03/02/08 01:06 AM #1 At what point power wise is an aftermarket fuel pump and surge tank required in a auto XR6T ute. Custom tune is a couple of months away but have Siemens injectors that will be fitted.
03/02/08 01:15 AM03/02/08 01:15 AM #2 Depends on the tune, how the car drives (ie does the rear drop hard on full accelaration? ), do you push it hard through corners ect.300 is time to look for a pump upgrade, though poeple run with more from the stock pump but its a gamble.A walbro intake can be fine for 350, but that's not sorting the surge issues... ok if you just drive normally and dont nail it under half tank.Surge tank (2lt plus) is a must for hard cornering and hard launches on low fuel levels. Some cars with 300odd will take off smoothly on hard launch, others (like mine) drop the rear hard and the intank pump can't pick up fuel.Hope that helps.
03/02/08 01:31 AM03/02/08 01:31 AM #3 Author Hmmm, maybe I dont even need one then.....Chasing 300rwkw MAX... We have no circuts up here, no drag strips so it mite get a stab or two just driving around on the highway. Plus im a pretty tame driver.
03/02/08 01:46 AM03/02/08 01:46 AM #4 Yeah see how you go without it... if you just end up with 300 that doesnt come on boost like a nut bag the stock fuel system should keep up fine... I'd put a walbro intank pump in just to be safe though, cheap insurance
03/02/08 01:47 AM03/02/08 01:47 AM #5 I had a 044 in-line pump fitted when I got my custom tune, and I find now with the re-tune suging isn't an issue on the street, but I can feel the slightest surge at the end of the drag strip.I think a pump upgrade should be fine for you Brad, even just an intank one
03/02/08 01:53 AM03/02/08 01:53 AM #6 Author Im trying to avoid an intank jobby, mainly because ive gotta remove the ute tub and drill spot welds to get to the tank, or slide the diff out of the way to drop the tank. I was considering just fitting a 044 in line with the stock fuel system just b4 the engine. Im not intending on the tune being a crazy one as ive gotta look after the 4spd auto.....doh!Because my tuner is 900klm away I really want to make sure everything is sorted and up to scratch b4 I go, as I cant just drive back there next week once ive fixed any issues. So im thinking it may be good insurance just to fit a pump/tank so that I can be sure I wont have any fuel starvation issues. But once again, it wont be running on the strip or track, just a few squirts round town. Edited 03/02/08 01:57 AM03/02/08 01:57 AM by hanra
03/02/08 02:00 AM03/02/08 02:00 AM #7 hey, at the end of the day there's nothing wrong with being extra safe, the in-lines make a little bit of noise though, see how you go mate
03/02/08 02:05 AM03/02/08 02:05 AM #8 Author Yeah that's really what it boils down to. I had mentioned that I was thinking about doing this once b4 but got flamed......? I realise the stock pump will still be a restriction flow wise, but I would guess a 044 in series would increase line pressure? Provided I wasnt drag racing on the street with less then 1/2 tank I would of thought normal driving/squirting here and there it should be ok?
03/02/08 02:08 AM03/02/08 02:08 AM #9 yeah it'll be fine mate, mine is - its only on top speed runs and quick drag runs that you get a tiny bit of surge on WOT
03/02/08 02:14 AM03/02/08 02:14 AM #10 Author Oh well sounds good, thanks to the nearest drag strip being 400klm away and plenty of 60-80klm speed limits.
