XR6 Turbo Maintenance Guide: Keeping Your Barra Healthy
The turbo Barra is famously tough, but turbo engines reward good maintenance. These are the habits and service items experienced owners recommend.
Oil and filters
- Change the oil and filter regularly, and more often if the car is driven hard, tracked or tuned. A quality oil of the specified grade is a must; see the long-running oil discussion.
- Let the engine warm up before using boost, and give the turbo a short cool-down after hard driving.
- Replace the air filter on schedule. A clean intake helps the turbo.
Turbo-specific items
- Turbo oil supply screen: check and clean it (how-to).
- Boost control solenoid: clean or replace it if boost becomes erratic (guide).
- Intercooler piping: check clamps and hoses for splits and leaks. Boost leaks rob power and economy.
Ignition and fuel
- Spark plugs: turbo engines are hard on plugs, and modified cars often need colder plugs and closer gaps.
- Premium fuel: run the octane your tune is designed for. Considering E85? Read the E85 thread first.
Driveline, cooling and the rest
- Have the automatic transmission fluid serviced by someone familiar with your transmission, especially if the car is tuned.
- Coolant: replace it at the recommended intervals and check hoses on older cars.
- Diff oil, brake fluid and power steering fluid are often forgotten on older cars.
- Suspension wear items: ball joints, bushes and bearings (see common problems).
