I must say that I was surprised by the overwhelming level of interest out there for APS to re-look at the issue of making our intercooler system available separately. Well, I had given the issue serious thought over the past few weeks and have decided to respond to the consumer demand (abuse ;-) :o

The issues of EPA emission laws remain though. To this end, the APS front mount intercooler will be made available with the proviso that the consumer understands that installing a non-standard intercooler system to his vehicle will be result in the vehicle being in breach of the EPA emission laws. In other words, he understands that unlike the APS PHASE II and III systems, there is no proof of continued compliance to ADR79/00.

The intercooler system is very similar to that used in the PHASE III system though with a number of differences in order to reduce cost and to differentiate it from that used in the total solution PHASE III system – which is our premiere system for the XR6T.

The intercooler is a straight bolt in deal and as large as possible to fit without cutting up the body sheet metal. It also includes a new power steering fluid cooler and plumbing along with every nut, bolt and bracket required for fitting.

The core is of bar and plate construction with internal and external air finning. End tanks are light weight cast alloy and the total intercooler system is rated for 600 horsepower applications.

Intercooler Performance Specifications

Vehicle Speed - 100 kph

Ambient Temperature - 30 C

Mass Air Flow - 0.5 kg/sec

Engine Power - 490 kW

Maximum Pressure Drop - 7 kPa (1 psi)

Inlet Pressure - 1.25 BAR

Inlet Temperature - 205 C

Outlet Temperature - 38 C

To alleviate boost control issues when used with zero back pressure exhaust, APS has made a 321 stainless steel replacement swing valve and Turbocharger Wastegate Valve Actuator Assembly available as an option.

The standard intercooler colour is black, however on special order (special price), we can produce a silver version for those who wish to show off the intercooler.

Price is $1895 including GST (plus fitting) and can be purchased for self-fitment. The system comes complete with detailed engineering illustrations etc. to assist with installation.

Details of the system can be found on the APS web site http://www.aps-xr6t.com/falcon/fmic/fmic.htm

G'day Peter,

I am assuming that the type of person looking at buying the intercooler would be someone who has already done work to the car eg chip/computer, injectors and fuel pump upgrades? Rather than being an alternative to phase 1 - due to injectors etc, limitations?

Cheers

Chief, you are 100% correct. We would expect that the customer would already have computer, larger injectors, etc. etc. before adding a more efficient and free flowing intercooler system. It would be preferable for the exhaust system to be improved (lower backpressure) to take full advantage of this massive intercooler.

Customers with the APS PHASE II system might want an intermediate power level between PHASE II and III specification. Again, this would be ideal for that application.

We are simply responding to consumer demand for our intercooler system to be made available for people who wish to go down the DIY development approach. Our objective was to make this process easier by including items such as the power steering cooler and the optional swing valve/wastegate/actuator components necessary for turbocharger pressure control at high power levels.

What are the differences?

Is the turbocharger swing valve and wastegate actuator available seperately from the intercooler? PS.. I can source them from GCG anyhow so its not really that big an issue..

PS.. congratulations on the decision to respond to market demands and sell the components seperately. Now sell the injectors, air intake, inlet manifold and transmission upgrade seperately as well..

Hi Peter

As you know I have had the Phase II upgrade done. So you are saying I can have this intercooler installed to give me a bit more power. I currently have approx 274kws.

What power do you think it would give me?

What is the maximun boost that I can run without playing with the swing valves etc.?

The main difference is that the phase III intercooler system has a large cast alloy duct between the throttle body and the intercooler inlet pipe.

The new system has a moulded reinforced silicone hose which connects the inlet pipe to the stock ford casting which connects to the throttle body

Other than this the intercooler systems are identical in every way, same massive bar and plate core, cast alloy end tanks, intercooler plumbing etc., etc.

The swing valve and actuator parts will be available at some time in the near future, as of now we have only produced sufficient volume for current intercooler production.

The new intercooler and retune will lift power to well over 300KW at the wheels it really depends on what ron fuel is available.

The swing valve and actuator (and turbo housing mod) will need to be installed to get control of turbo pressure.

I would also recommend the engine/unichip will need to be retuned by C and J to correct the air/fuel mixtures and turbo pressure to a safe level. :finger:

I'd estimate that on 98 RON premium fuel that a consistent 320 to 330KW at the treads would be a practical power level to achieve on a manual trans xr6t.

Have you ever tuned a XR6T using some of the ELF fuels? I would be interested in seeing any results..

Also where are these auto transmission packages up to?
