Helping Out A Friend With An Issue - Your Comments Much Appreciated

Hi All,

Just a quick intro - I actually don't own an xr6 turbo, but I do prefer them over the V8s (either Ford or Holden...im quite neutral). I personally have an Mitsubishi Evo 6 TME (yes I know, only milk comes in 2litres...but milk doesnt come in 2 litres and a turbo with AWD )

A mate of mine has a BF XR6 ute, and apparently its having some issues. I am doing this without his knowledge so I dont want to give too much away.

Ford (FMC not the dealer) are not honouring a warranty for bent valves due to some chain reaction stating ECU was chipped causing extra stress. My mate swears black and blue he has never chipped it and will most likely seek legal advice.

I have done some reading and researching on his behalf and read that Ford can count how many times the ECU has been flashed. There is obviously a way for them to see if the tune is still the factory tune, but if it has been flashed 5 times before, is that sufficient "evidence" that it was previously tuned by someone else?

I also read that the BA mark I and II were retro flashed by ford dealers to fix boost spiking issues, therefore this would also count as a flash? Was this problem evident in the BF? Sorry for so many questions I know I should use the search button, but it keeps showing unrelated posts about how some members are "worried about issues with warranty" rather than the information I require.

I dont know anything about BFs or Fords or their dealers, but I do know that my mate's fatheris also a good mate of mine and they are both struggling at the moment to deal with all these legal issues. I know there is a chance my mate is lying, but for the time being can we please just ASSUME he is innocent until proven guilty.

If anyone has had similar issues or knows how the Ford ECU works and how they can presume ECU changes even if the current tune is in standard form it would be much appreciated. Also can PM me if this information should not be in public forums.

Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong section, I looked up the ECU section but it was more related to tuning rather than warranty issues.

Its very unfortunate to hear about your mates drama. I reckon it sounds like either your mate is telling pork pies or the previous owner flashed the ECU assuming it was a second hand car.

Ford has had several ECU revisions from BA - BF although no factory 10psi tunes

Say in the case that your mate is the first owner of the vehicle and honestly never flashed the car id be looking at getting a second opinion from another dealership and get them to show you the evidence of it being flashed, and how it differs from just a standard factory update.
