Zf Taking A Nap

Gday folks,

Was driving home from Kanberra tonight, cruise control on - sitting on about 115 for a couple of hundred kms when I had a issue.

The headlights flickered a little, then the ABS light and red ! flashed on in the dash for a second while the car gave a little shudder.

I turned the cruise off and traction back on, it didnt do anything again after that so was left wondering.....but driving along fine.

First time I came to traffic lights 30mins later in Sydney the D indicator for trans started flashing on the dash and it wouldnt change gears (stuck in 5th)

I limped around the corner, tryed flicking it thru the gears in perf mode while sitting there and it would only sit in fifth.

Turned the car off, checked for leaks etc and couldnt see anything amiss (or smell anything)

Turned it on again 10mins later and it seemed to be fine again..............and made it the rest of the way home no issues.

I had the trans serviced about 6000kms ago (even with the genuine solid gold stuff) and its always been good. Car has copped a bit at times like last weekends cruise, but it did almost a 1000km since then without anything, and this happening out of the blue in the middle of nowhere has me concerned!

Any ideas folks??

ive got a feeling who ever masters rebuilds and a set price for a service on the zf is going to start making a heap of money as ive noticed a lot more cars starting to have gearbox issues of late it was only a matter of time regardless of how many tuners tell ppl how strong they are ..........

im pretty sure mine is on its way out but no *beep* ive called wants to work on them in the wollongong area anyway ? unless somebody knows somewhere

id rather do it myself then let some retard at ford have ago at it every time those fools touch the car they f*ck something up

Agreed I wanna know places which will happily service these boxes, because like anything mechanical they do wear out eventually. Ford suggest that an oil change at 160,000k's but seeing as alot of people here drive their cars hard an more frequent change would be better.

I got mine done at my tuners and it felt great after I had it done (it had done almost 50,000km running a tune)

Which is why this was really out of left field when I was driving Ms Daisy!

Sounds like a limp mode kinda thing but it's pretty strange it would just do it on the hwy after a couple of hungie kms.

Maybe C&V can hook up the diagnostics and see if there is any fault codes?

02 sensor has gone, which of course there is none around anywhere to be had today!

Still seems weird it would affect all those other things like the box and abs though, but hell what would I know! Damned new fangled techno machines hehehe

hmm that is wierd, but with the whole car basically being electronically controlled, one thing seems to lead to another these days. my ford explorer did the same thing as what u described...but it was out of oil due to the '*beep*' that serviced it and cross threaded the drain plug which allowed the oil to drip out. still cant believe than an oxy sensor did that. mind you my mate put led's in his car and that stopped cruise, traction and abs from working haha

To me, this sounds like a temporary power cut somewhere and caused the 'box to go to 'limp mode'. Nothing to do with the gearbox.

Have fun finding an intermittent power fault. Could be a dry electrical connection somewhere?

Well since the O2 sensors was replaced its been sweet.

Of course all this happened right after the warranty was up!

(Not that I would really trust ford to touch it anyway)

Almost a month on now, and turns out that didnt help at all.

Its down at the shop for the fourth time now and Im pulling my hair out stressing about it.

Flickering of the headlights and ICC has got a lot more pronounced now, and it basically goes into limp mode with a dashboard lightshow on most start ups / within 30 secs.
