Just looking at the turbo on the weekend and noticed that I am missing a few nuts/bolts on the turbo exhaust housing and the exhaust manifold, I have spoken to a few people, Ford being one and a couple of exhaust shops to find out how difficult it would be to replace them. Common problem.

I borrowed this photo from SJW,

I am missing the two nuts/bolts on the underside of the exhaust manifold housing joining the exhaust manifold to the turbo housing...

If you follow the red arrow you should be able to see what I mean...

I am located in Sydney metro... Can anyone advise if it could be a DIY or a professional? HOW hard can it be?

Hey there mate

I work for ford as a mechanic and every service on turbos we have to remove all heat shields and tighten all exhaust and turbo manifold bolts. A lot of the time bolts are missing as in your case. The constant expanding and contracting form heat etc just works the bolts loose. To replace the bolts we usually just replace with high tensile bolts you can get anywhere from repco etc. We also tend to put a very small amount of loctite on the bolts to stop them working loose. the bolts can be a pig to get too by the way but you should be able to do it fairly easily.

P.S. just make sure your bolts arent too deep for the hole

cheers

Yeah its very common for them to get loose or fall out. The last 3 xr6t' Ive done stuff to have had really really loose bolts... and missing.

The one on the comp housing is easy to replace. just pull one of the others out and go to an auto shop wih it, should get one the same, no longer though.

The other one looks like its just the nut off the stud? Easy to change, not sure of the size though, maybe go to ford or a turbo shop for it.

And, if one has fallen out, then ALL the manifold studs are most likely loose too, so tighten them all up and you'll have strong boost again.

Does it wistle loud on boost? I imagine it would.

Yeah it sort of whistles,

I had a look at it this morning and it does not

appear to be enough room for me to replace

the bottom two from under the car.

I cant even get my fingers close enough to replace the nut or bolt..

The tuner told me that I had to take the turbo out of the car

with the exhaust manifold.

The picture shows the top two but I need to get to the bottom two

from under where the arrow is showing..
