HI all

Has anyone ever had problems with a four speed auto dealing with the power of a turbo motor. Reason being, to buy a four speed auto 03 - 05 is cheaper that a later model 6 speed which is obviously a bullet proof gearbox. Any intel would be greatly appreciated.

Do a quick search on here & you will find most people that run big outputs say 280-300rwkw + will have had some kind of issue with their 4 speeds. Keep the power below that & drive sensibly & you shouldnt have a problem. Fingers crossed

Not quite so and a potentially misleading generality.

It depends on how you drive and how the gearbox has been set up and maintained through either Edit or a combination of internal and software means.

Furthermore the ZF is far from bullet proof and relatively limited in its accessibility for modification.

You need to ascertain the history of your proposed purchase far more carefully in an auto than with a manual.

One that has been unmodded, not used for towing would be a good start.

In some ways I would be suspicious rather than relieved if I discovered that the original owner had fitted a trans oil cooler - what were the concers and motives?

I am running around 330 at the wheels with a four speed auto and there are many more who run considerably more.

Generally only bad news failures and problems will get reported so for every case of failure you will read about there are likely to be tenfold more success stories you wont read about.

The cost of righting a dead 4 speed varies depending upon the level of damage but falls in the range from $1500-$3000 - for a ZF it is considerably more.

If I was planning to run similar power levels to what I have currently I wold willingly pay the extra and get a ZF box as I would likely also benfit from a tougher bottom end and better valve springs due to the model sereis the intro of the ZF box incorporates.

I got your usual Cai etc and want to flash my 2005 ba mk11 auto but am a bit suspect of how the four speed would cope reading some of the threads not after a big increase just a bit more poke. What do some of you experts recommend :)
