Need Some Advice

Awhile back I enquired about the centre muffler removal as I also had plans to change over the rear muffler due to hollow spots. I can't delay it any longer however because the rear muffler is near dead and the drone is getting worse (although it sounds cool under revs).

I've changed my mind though and would prefer an exhaust for performance rather than sound. The only mod my car has endured is the 2nd cai with k&n filter. At this stage I have no intentions of getting the car edited.

As I have no working knowledge of exhaust systems what would people suggest for a stock T? I still like it to sound grunty, but also like to have that little bit of extra power to go with it. $600 would be my absolute limit in terms of cost though.

If you have no intentions of getting an edit, you will gain little if any or even go backwards in power buy placing an exhaust on your car...I would suggest that you get yourself a cat back system ONLY...atleast then your car will have less change of going into overboost and the factory computer limiting engine power. Looking at the systems available X force seem to be the cheapest, if you are able to get a single 3 inch system cat back that would be my only recommendation, and this will give you a bit more in the noise department, the twin outlet rear tips look better than stock and the car shouldn't come out of the shop making less power than it went in with.

A couple more questions...

I have heard (and read) that a 3 inch single system is too restrictive for the T; whereas the 3.5 inch is just fine?

Is cat-back including the cat or without?

Oh, and can someone point me in the direction of a workshop in Melbourne (SE suburbs preferred) that can do all this for me?

I don't know why we've had so many questions about a single 3" system for the T recently, why are guys being steered in that direction? I expect it'd be fine for a N/A, but for the T it is a step backwards from the stock system.

If you want performance and not sound, why change the exhaust? I'd get another second hand stock exhaust (I've got one in the shed I paid $60 for, dump, cat and back that did 3,000km's). I've seen centre/rear T exhausts on ebay for $20 but don't know how old/good condition it's in. If you want performance, the edit is the first thing to do, however a $450 wog cooler will give you upto 20rwkw (worked fine with my stock computer/cai and bmc filter, however I never dynoed the car without the cooler).

as others have said, an exhaust without edit won't do much for performance. I'd keep it cheap and simple and chop the centre muffler. You'll get a deeper note, and it'll be cheap and not affect performance.

It's not that I don't want an edit - I can't afford an edit. The exhaust is something that needs to be done so rather having them replace the rear muffler without having any other work done seemed silly imo. I'm not too fussed with other enhancements so may as well leave it stock until I can afford to get into a GT (well that's the master plan anyhoo).
