Just looking in redbook at the wholesale vaulr of a 2004 XR6T BA Mk II.. scarry stuff..

Price when new (RRP) $46,350

Trade in price guide* $29,900

that's $16,450 lost in 12 months or 36%.

Why are they not holding thier value?? like for example the WRX :wackit:

Agree but trade in value is what the dealer will give you I.e. wholesale value. you can get more privately

extract..

average kms 18,000 - 22,000

Trade in price guide* $29,100 - $32,600

National average price - private sale* $32,000 - $36,500

Price when new (RRP) $46,350

This will drop in the next month again with the BF coming out. Dealers are already advertising BA II 6Spd BRAND NEW for under $39,990 this will drive values down even more.

The dealers dont do themselves any favours in the long term by discounting the cars like this. Expensive Daewoo is the same. The Aussie cars will never have a decent resale value if they keep this up.. anyway that's my whinge..

Yeah, it sucks big time, and is one of the major reasons we bought a second hand T. Ours had 20,000kms on it and was less than a year old and we paid $33K. May not be the best deal in the world, but still a HUGE saving over new, for what we viewed as effectively a new car anyway. And we bought it realising that we'd keep it for a decent length of time in the full expectation that it's worth would plummet from there... :3gears::gooff:

I guess that's a drawback of buying traditional Aussie cars, woeful resale values. The Euros seem to do so much better in this regard, but also cost a lot more to buy in the first place. Swings and roundabouts really. :spoton:

I think the thing is that when it comes time to trade in good neg skills are just as vital as when you first brought the car...

Use the fact that your buying your next car from the dealer to your advantage, ensure that they know if you can't get a good trade-in you'll walk from the new car deal "because you won't be able to afford it"...

This is how I managed to get $14,000 for a car which was only worth $9000 according to the dealers, they knew that if they didn't give $14,000 then "I wouldn't be able to afford to buy the T"... volia, they found a way "in which they could buy my car for $14,000", in fact both the dealers found a way to do it, just one gave an extra $1000 off the purchase price of the T plus ensure that I wouldn't have to make repayments on the laser whilst waiting for the T...

edit: in effect I was $6500 better off than if I simply took their original offer...

I also know my grandmother (who used to be an accountant and knows money and has fairly good neg skills) has turned around and told a dealer that she will sell her car for x no less, she was about to walk out when the salesperson said no when the manager came over and said yes as long as it's a sale today and not a "dealer x said this" type deal...

Anybody who buys a car to sell in 12 months time is the person who contributes to that model car not retaining its value. In saying that I bought my car brand spankin, intend on keeping it minimun 10 years and will get my moneys worth out of it.If you buy new and sell within 3 years expect o lose money simple. :tease:
