4' Dump fouling on block, common aftermarket occurence?

Hi.

New to the xr6t club, pretty stoked tbh.

I've just picked up a turbo-back Manta Exhaust for an fg2 manual sedan, going for something a bit quiter than the 4' Ultrex that was on it. But the dump is fouling on the rear of the block, and I'm either going to:

1. Shave off a lightly rusted 10-15mm protrusion from where the block flares out to meet the bell housing (just visible in Pic1, above sump), or

2. Massage a 10-15mm divet into the dump pipe, unfortunately its going to be very close to a weld.

 

Of note, the old Ultrex 4" dump was also rubbing on the same protrusion (Pic 2).

I've bolted up the rest of the exhaust and it appears like she's goin to sit quite nicely, so I'm confident the flanges are all welded correctly.

 

And so my question,

Am I doing something stupid by filing off the nib? Better off giving the pipe a love tap?

Any chance you can loosen the dump at the turbo and it'll clear? There is a fair bit of movement from doing that.

 

I've often thought about grinding the block there, but never bothered.

 

You can bash the dump pipe to clear it with no difference in performance.

 

Imo either is acceptable.

 

If you did want it to be perfect though, you'd get a dump that clears everything without grinding or hammering.

Thanks, I'll give it another wiggle up the turbo end but I think I'm out of luck. Might end up doing a bit of both 👍
