Turns out I've spent just shy of $12k for my current setup (speakers, amp and sub)...but the system as a whole retailed for $35k. So I reckon I've done alright haha. Still be a sickening amount of money for most people to have spent on HiFi gear though, I can appreciate.

my gear is mostly tight arse budget orientated

apart from the Yamaha RX V475 and sub, everything else was bought on gumtree

Yamaha NS 55 floor standing loudspeakers    $100

Jamo center 7.2    $50

Warfedale 9.1's    $100

How much was it RRP?

Jamo and Wharfedale are legit

They also won't sound any worse than they did when they were new.

I paid around $900 for the AV unit
It came with the sub and a bunch of small speakers
Not sure about the Yamaha floor standers
I think the Warfedale's retailed for around $800
Similar price for the Jamo (I think)

And chicken sh#t amount compared to what "serious" rich karnts will spend

Hell - they'll actually buy a power cable that costs many multiples of your systems RRP

One thing I have noticed though - it costs exponentially more each time you want to go up a level :S

Oh yeah - well, considering the top of the line Focal Utopia Grand EM's run up around $300k a pair just for the front floorstanders, around $20k for the matching centre speaker and around $18k for the matching rear bookshelves you're looking at nearly $350k just on speakers...then you need the equivalent amps to run it all, so you're easily looking at the same again on power amps...then factor in cabling, building a room/house around the speakers, room treatment, the crane to lift the speakers in...I reckon I could easily run the cost up to over $1million!

But yeah, realistically I think the law of diminishing returns is definitely at play. The next, serious and worthwhile, step up from my setup would retail for up near $100k+...but having listened to a setup like that I don't think it's worth the 3x difference in price compared to my new setup - in that I don't think it's 3x better. And it's definitely not 8x better than what I actually paid for my setup. Sure, it does sound better and it was glorious to listen to...but it doesn't make my system sound sh!t in comparison, in the way comparing my new system to my old one makes my old one sound.

Love the cat for scale 🤣 I used to sell Wharfedale at the HiFi shop when I worked there.

How do you find them? - use the surround?

As soon as you turn on the surround stuff, you're pretty much on a level playing field with my gear as far as it goes.

The barber shop clip, game surround audio, virtual surround etc it's the tech and how it works with your head/ears/brain that makes the most difference, not the actual headphones on your head.

Unless you have RGB on your headphones of course - that's a definite game changer

I like the audio. seems to come out crisp and clear and has heaps of bass which I like.

One of the things I enjoyed about the Arctic 7 is that there is a volume wheel on one side and then a focus wheel on the other side.

What the focus wheel allows you to do, for example you playing PUBG and have Discord running in the back ground for communication.

If you find yourself in a pickle in pubg and want to listen for foot steps, you can use the focus wheel to reduce the audio from discord and more for pubg or vice versa.

The problem I have is that there was an update which I <3 Bananased it up and when you try to focus on discord you get both the game and discord audio.

Just haven't made the time to try and look it up and fix it.

Funny you mention that. a Long time ago I spent heaps on my Yamaha RX2700 and B&W speakers. I reckon it was well worth spending the money as I still have the system up and running till this day. However anything I want to buy now a days, I been getting from gumtree instead.

Bought the Phantom 4 pro from gumtree for half price.

looking at getting a Nikon D7200 at half price with 5 lenses...

Gumtree is the new ebay.

im going something a little less in your face on my next surround sound when I get some money together.

gave mum my jamo system which suits her bigger room. im only in a small bedroom unit with small lounge so something like this will fit in better.

im going for sound quality over sheer volume for my wee little room. still packs a punch and goes louder than I need anyways, viewed at my local home theatre specialist.

Yeah,

Haven't tried any of the Focal gear, but they get pretty good reviews, have people who are huge fans.
