I am not an oil expert but have been a mechanic for 25 years and I would be using at least 15w40 oil in the turbo as with the extra heat that they make 10w 30 is to light.

I wanted to get some advice and hopefully get to the bottom of the (mis)information about the correct grade of oil to use Vs the grade that is being put in our babies. I still haven't confirmed what the spec of the Castrol oil my dealer put in is......

BTW. I would have thought that when in doubt the Service guys would RTFM and put whats specified in.........

No worrys mate as for looking up the manuel or hand book that is to hard,but as they are the so called experts they should all ready know this.

I had my 30K service a week ago and asked what oil was put in the car. I was told 10w30. I told the service person the book stated 15w40. I was told that the spec had been changed and there was a tech bulliten about it.

Today I received my service report in the mail and the oil used is listed as Castrol FMX Magnatec 1030 which sounds like it is 10w30. :ermm:

My service invoice for 30,000 km service, done today, lists Castrol XT1030 as the engine oil used.

I use shell helix plus which is the right viscosity 15w - 50 but a higher temp. I have read all sorts of things about not going a lower viscosity also note that this is what shell recommend for the turbo lasers as well.

I also use Magnatec 10w-40, after recommendation from a Ford dealer.

The only oil I have found to meet the Ford spec (in the BA Series Handbook)

of WSE-M2C905-A is the formula by Penrite HPR 10, a 10w-50 Grade.

Is a semi synthetic and has a good viscosity index as well as a High TBN.

The higher the Viscosity the better for bearings, the higher the TBN the better the control over keeping the inside's clean.

Go www.penrite.com.au and have a read of their TDS.

Am currently running oil in AU wagon six, and compared to 5w-30 I used prevuosly no drop off in fuel economy. I plan on using this oil when due to change.

Like Stang, I use Shell Helix Plus 15W - 50. When I spoke to my service department last time, this is the oil they recommended I use.

Go figure, if you ask me, as long as you stay close to what ford specifies, you wont have any issues. 15W - 50 is close enough with that extra touch of security at high temps, so far no issues with the car!!

I use Motul 300v power racing 5w30 as recommended by a Rep same used in vehicles at the APS day at C and J motor sport. This is a fully synthetic ester based oil grade 5 Australian oil grades only go to 3 (this oil is made in France). It is manufactured from vegetable oil and is non mineral based. It also has 0% shear loss meaning a stable viscosity. Some oils under extreme loads will change their viscosities leading to little or no protection eg. heat turbo. Used on a Mitsubishi GTO it dropped 15degrees off the bearing temps. My car runs a lot cooler now. Problems to look for are oil consumption with any thinner oil than recommended. As some tee's tolerances are better than others, oil consumption could be a problem. I fear that this is the main reason that they recommend a heavier oil. Any multi-valve engine should have a good viscosity oil as it will lead to premature wear on the valve train. I have a K&N filter fitted but will go for hardriver filter next as it has a finer filter mesh and is designed for synthetic oils. HRT dare I say it use this oil, Alcon use their brake fluid, Konica race team GTP use their oil, Nismo oil's are all Motul and any motorbike rider will tell you they won't use anything other than Motul. Good experiences so far.

Oh yeah hope you are Rich Dave oil is only avalible in 2 litre bottles and at about $46.00 a bottle $184.00 an oil change can be hexy. But on a $50,000 + car this is surely cheap insurance especially if you are going to do the 15,000 klm ford servicing.

As some will recall there has been some debate in a couple of threads about the correct oil for the "T"

The little blue book tells us that 15w40 is the correct grade, yet some are being told by their dealer that 10w30 is OK...Or worse they are just putting in the 10w30 and not saying anything to the owners.

I checked the Castrol web site and the only magnatec oil I could find is rated 10w40. :sick:

Now I am realy confused and concerned that my "T" has the wrong oil in it.

Anyone out there work for Castrol??

BTW I aquired a copy of the dealer service training notes 5-14 and it clearly states that:

Reccommended use only engine oil which meets the requirement of API specifications SJ/CF (not SJ or CF alone) For optimal fuel economy use SAE viscosity grade 15W40.  Ford specification WSE-M2C905-A

Ford R1-310 meets these specifications

I also checked Castrol's website after seeing Castrol FMX written on my service docket and as you say - no mention of it.

My dealer claims it is only available to them in bulk (I.e. we can't buy it off the shelf) but that it is "very close to" Magnatec. Not sure what "very close" means but they did advise that if I wanted to top it up to do so with Magnatec. Based on that advice, I had hoped that "very close" at least meant the same grade but going on your findings, who knows? :huh:

I'll have to nail them down to an answer as the least they can do is offer an explanation as to why they are using different grade oils than the spec suggests.

Motul is about the only oil I would really trust exxy yes but top stuff :gooff:

The others seem a dark art to me claim plenty but dont tell you much

One thing I really notice with Motul is the how quickly my car now cools down which leads me to believe that it is far more stable at temp, and also really offers some power advantage, small but noticable

So far have Motul brake fluid engine oil and power steering fluid in my car and have gearbox and diff oil on its way!
