I had the MIL come on in the weekend, had to drive 400km in the wrong direction from home (family commitment) and managed to get it into the dealership.

They've just called me and told me that the VCT (cam?) phasers (one or both) are jammed and the solenids for both are also stuffed.

The quote they've given me for parts alone is gob smacking (I saw another post on here saying Ford charged $280 for the solenoids in 2014, try tripling that....) plus 6 hours labour. Plus they say no parts here and 4 days (!) from Oz. I had diff bushes delivered here in 17 hours from the GC.

Any ideas on where I can get the parts from at a reasonable price? Second hand? Ebay? Ford Australia?

Car is an '09 G6ET.

Thanks in advance.

What's the specs on the car? Is it tuned?

New cam phaser are quite expensive. Unlikely they are the issue. Solenoids vary from $80 for non genuine replacements to $300 ish for new from Ford.

They can be cleaned and reused in some cases.

If the has been tuned it possible the issue is not related the cam phasing hardware and couple be a skipped timing chain. It's hard to say exactly what the cause would be without more info tho.

I've purchased parts from FordHold Wreckers (here in Perth) Mcaruthur Autoparts (NSW) and Ferntree Gully Auto Salvage (VIC) with no issue. You'll be better off going to a specialist wrecker as the parts will be better quality.

Car is standard. I'm 650km from home and can't get another opinion on it.

I found this on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FORD-VARIABLE-CAM-TIMING-VCT-ACTUATOR-FALCON-BA-BF-FG-TERRITORY-4-0L-XR6-TURBO/282003867557?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3De1cf8777b7504f4796375c4e374f8cb9%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D282003867557

I'm assuming that's the solenoid I want (two of)?

Can't find any cam phasers, but maybe I'm searching under the wrong thing?

If I chuck in two new solenoids (plus labour), am I likely to get a fix when they say the cam phasers are stuffed as well? I know that's a difficult question to answer without more info, but I'll tell you what I can if that helps? They've said it was from unclean oil, which I admit I pushed to about 19 months, then got it changed 2 months ago. Cursing my stupidity.

I had a buggered solenoid and got both off a wrecked n/a engine for some beers. $40 each was wreckers going rate.

Only threw a code for the buggered solenoid cause it was electrically dead.

yes that is the part you need, but there are two style. A style with a retaining bracket and a still without (as pictured) You'd need to confirm before ordering.

Opinions on the long oil change interval aside. I'd be pushing for the dealer to clean the current units in an ultrasonic bath especially given the history of the engine.

I'd be surprised if they don't come good after a clean. Re the phasers the car will report them as an issue if the car commands a change in Cam position but it doesn't happen.

This can be because the phaser is actually stuffed or because it's not getting the oil required to move it due to a faulty/blocked solenoid.

Holding the pedal flat to the floor and cranking the car will reset the phasers. So i'd push them to clean the solenoids, reset the phaser as described and then let it run.

The phaser have physical limits in place so the cam angle cannot move to the point engine damage can occur.

Hmmn. They've told me I'm lucky valves haven't hit pistons.....

So if I go through that with having them cleaned, I'm up for the clean and 6 hours labour, hopefully fixed?

Do you have to disconnect fuel or something before cranking with foot flat to stop it from revving it's head off?

Is there a way to tell which style of actuator/solenoid I need?

Thanks heaps for your help.

Yeah nah unless the phaser have physically fallen apart....ford have built some degree of protection into the design

6hrs seem excessive given the task but yes assuming the come back after a clean

No the PCM will cut fuel when the car is cranked with the pedal fully depressed

Is there a way to tell which style of actuator/solenoid I need?

With the coil cover off and the actuator seals removed the actuators will slide out by hand in they don't have the retainer.

Thanks heaps for your help.

Ok, so are cam phasers and VCT actuators the same thing? As I'm told I may be being led up the garden path? I just want to buy the right parts at a reasonable price and get this sorted. Going to have to fly home without it and leave it with my dad.

And do I need cam position sensors?

Or should I just take a punt and get them cleaned and reinstalled.

Sorry for all the questions, but every step I take seems to open up a different question.
