Rough / Vibrating Sound & Feeling Over 130Kmph

Hey Guys,

Urgently need some comments on what some think may be the problem with my Ute...

Accelerating up to 130kmph ... all smooth... when over 130kmph, a real rough feeling like a strong harsh vibration comes on strong feels like its coming from under drivers feet / back of the engine... remains this way up to about 170kmph, and over this speed it goes smooth again.

Regardless of half accelerating or full throttle, its impossible to get away from this rough, harsh feeling & sound coming on... sounds like something is badly wrong.

Been an issue for a number of months now, I haven't really worried about it as I don't often get up to those speeds

I have a generic 14psi tune - when this is loaded into the car, and when the car is totally returned to stock, there is no difference... still the same issue.

The only possibility I wondered about is the fact I have removed the restrictor ring and haven't had any tuning to allow for this change.... but im not sure that such a small change could have this impact.

Glad of any / all comments on how people think I could fix this / what it is!

Cant help with issue....guessing maybe tailshaft balance? (weight fallen off perhaps?)...but let others chime in.

Side note....apparently those generic tunes are rubbish and can blow up engines and what not lol

Not sure if removing restrictor ring would cause immediate damage....but I thought if you make the cat more 'hi flow' ... then tune is definitely needed?

Good luck....I'm sure others will chime in when their ready :P

Could be... would that make sense for the problem only to be in that range though... and who could I get to assess this... as you can imaging Ford are being pricks about it refusing to test anything over the "speed limit"

Definitely.. going for a custom and injectors as soon as I get this issue sorted!.. I was half wondering if this would fix it if it was an issue from the extra flow... see what comments come in

I'm a noob myself...so don't trust too much of what I'm saying LOL I just relay things I've read in the past :P

See you raised a better thought that I didn't even think of I.e. how they would test at those speeds.

Maybe a tailshaft specialist in your area could offer some advice?

Hopefully some of the pros on here can offer their opinion.....

Replace centre bearing, cheap easy very common do this and it will be fixed

Didn't someone post some photos a while ago showing how to replace the centre bearing on a ute?

It's not that difficult. Get a new centre bearing from somewhere such as Hardy Spicer (35mm for a turbo). Remove the tail shaft and the photos in those posts will show you how to pull it apart. The hard part is getting safely under the car.

Remove the aluminium crossmember for the transmission mount and check the mount while you're there.

Thanks heaps for the replies - sounds like the center bearing is buggered and I'll get that replaced and see how it goes

Can anyone advise who would stock the correct replacement part / who has had experience fitting these bearings?

I am in Berwick... so anywhere in south-east side of Melbourne area is ideal....

Hardy Spicer have them - www.hardyspicer.com.au Diff and transmission places will probably also stock them, and can do the entire job if you are unable to.

Your car wil take either a FD-30-5835 or a FD-30-5855, depending on BA/BF1/BFII/FG.

If you remove the tail shaft and take it with you I think they can fit the centre bearing there (for a fee).

It's not particularly difficult - the photos in the two Tornado threads that I posted above will show you what to do.

Before separating the two tail shaft halves (at the CV joint) you need to mark them so that they go back together in the same place (ie balancing).

While you're at it, remove the aluminium crossmember for the transmission mount and check the transmission mount rubber. Photos of that are in one of the Tornado threads.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the input - FYI I got the tail-shaft removed by a local mechanic and took it into GJ Drivelines (they do nizpro tail-shaft upgrades etc) to get them to check it out.

The center bearing was OK... it turned out it was the rear CV - casing inside was cracked and it was all loose etc. Got a new better billet steel CV fitted and now its all good again... no more vibrations.

On another note... I have just had the Ute custom tuned with Bosch 57 lbs injectors... so its got injectors.. herrod intake, removed exhaust restrictor ring and a custom tune by Horsepower Factory - Dandenong, VIC. Their dyno says I have 251rwkw's.... this seems a lot less than anything else I have heard - even though dyno's is just a tool for tuning... this couldn't be right could it?!.... Before hand I had stock injectors and a 14psi generic tune from intune motorsport... that made 246... so its only 5rwkws from doing injectors and a custom tune... glad of comments

I have the mark 2 fg turbo... and havnt done the cat... do people recommend it?....
