l noticed in the Warranty and Service guide for our car there is a section on page 55 that offers an extended new car warranty provided your car is less than 36 months/90000km. Apparently you can extend for upto 3 years under the same conditions as your original new car warranty.

Anyone looked into this and how much it would cost per year?

We only plan on keeping our car for 3 years but extending by one year would have to help when resale time came around.

Mondie,

I am looking into this now.

I lease my car and do 40,000km a year so just after the 2nd year it would be out of warranty. I have asked to extend the warranty to 160,000km / 4 years. I am waiting for pricing. (My car is due to be built in March.... waiting...... waiting......)

I will let you know if they give me a price.

bdennis,

I will be in the same situation as you when my car arrives, so if you could also pass on any info you get to me that would be greatly appreciated.

Wig, (all)

I just spoke to the dealer who had been talking to the warranty people..

They will extend the warranty by adding 1 year and an additional 20,000km for approx $500-$700 (Not sure of figure as I did not ask). So this brings the car to 4 years and 120,000KM. But this is no good for people who do big K's and lease. I wanted the normal 3 years and 160,000km. This goes into the too hard basket and they do not do it...

So if you are doing 30,000km and going to keep the car for 4 years then you can extend the warranty. But if you do 40,000km + then the extended warranty is no go as it will only cover you for 3 years and not 4..

Make sence....?

Oh well.. Looks like the lease will take the hit for repairs in year 3 and 4. Or I may turn the baby over after 2 years 85,000/90,000km and get the next one (if the wife allows it...... )

I did purchase the extended warranty for A$895.00 from my dealer. I am sure you can get it cheaper but it was what I wanted at the time. It is a Ford backed warranty and therefor you will have no worries with claiming on things but please read the fine print for yourself. I would strongly recommend it. Avoid aftermarket extended warranties like the plague but manufacturer warranties are very different.

Good luck

The info I got was

Xtra 1 year and 20,000kms $799

Xtra 2 year and 40,000kms $899

Xtra 3 year and 60,000kms $999

I added the third one after I had ordered and still managed to get it for about $860.

I think its good value if

1. You want to keep it for more then 3 years

2. You want to sell it privatly when its almost 3years old

I find the whole concept of something being "free" from a car dealer as amusing.

It is all about the final price that can be negotiated.

The deal I finally agreed to saw me paying about $3000 below retail for the package.

Or if you prefer:

Free Premium Audio

and

Free 18" Alloys

and

Free Side airbags

and

Free mats, scuff inserts and cargo net

Of course non of it is really free - the dealer just reduces their margin

By the way, its worth negotiating;

1st dealer - no negotiation full price only

2nd - they pay half the price rise

3rd - thet pay whole price rise

4th - as above (finally a reasonable deal)
