Weight Training For Beginners

My 10 year old wants to start lifting. He asked how much in weights I've got. I have one of those 20kg dumbell packs and a bar. He reckons it's not enough for him haha! 

 

Going to atart him off with some bar only squats and deadlifts and body weight resistance exercises like the ones I showed you puff. 

Reckon that's a good start for him? He's a massive 10 year old. He's in medium adults clothes if that says anything.

15 body weight squats, 1 to 5 pushups, 0 chinups, just get them to hang or pull if they can , 0 to 5 sit ups.

 

This is the absolute most I would ask of a fit untrained kid for the first time. 

 

We all vary. 

 

Up it as you see fit. 

 

He is just a kid and is in no way conditioned to lift weights or the like. 

 

At his age, form is key.

 

20kg is enough for anyone to make gains. 

 

I can promise you he ain't 1 arm curling, pressing or rowing 20 kg for reps. 

 

Teach him that we don't ego lift, we lift to make gains with good form and at his age the weights should be light. 

 

This is only general advice and is in no way a plan for your son.

Just to be clear I don't want him lifting weights at all. He's just keen to get fit so he can be better at basketball. His solution was lifting. 

I'll definitely be focusing on form. Apart from not hurting himself, good form means good gains.

weights won't help with bball; growing will. Tell him to eat instead of lift xD Also bball practice helps at getting better at bball, funnily enough.

This guy ^^^^ 

He already trains he just wants to get stronger. Like I said his solution was to lift. I can only guide him the best way I can if he wants to do it. 

I'm not going to tell him no when the other alternative is sitting in front of an iPad or Xbox.

I feel that lifting weights could be counter productive in some ways for basket ball.

 

You need speed, agility and explosiveness in basket ball. 

 

While weight lifting will help with strength and explosiveness it can also cause mobility issues due to almost everyone's lack of stretching.

 

While a young person may benefit from weight lifting if they are lacking strength, in this case I think sports specific training would be more beneficial. 

 

Of course if he wants to lift then just keep him safe and keep it light. 

 

Just my 2c. You're his dad so you know where he's at.

Like I said I don't want him lifting. He's too young but I'd like to capitalise on his initiative to get active. 

Developing core strength would definitely benefit anyone.
