Don't worry Snapper, when I do legs can hurt for up to 5 days, just means you trained them properly and used all the muscle fibres right underneath.

I have started to pre exhaust my quads with 5 to 6 sets of leg extensions, from set 1 light set max reps to set 5 heavy weight to failure. Then on 6 set I go as heavy as I can, do 3 of 4 reps then work my way down stack till cannot do any more.

Then into squats, doing pre exhaust even if you are squaring 60kg, it will feel like 160kg and you will use every bit of muscle fibre doing them. First time I did it that way could not walk for a week and a half. But boy it feels good.

Do you train legs once or twice a week?

Had a similar routine to get big, that's when your legs feel like jelly and stairs are a nightmare.
