Hey all

Just wondering whether many people have used those electronic exhaust cutout/bypass valve thingos?

How do they compare with a proper sports exhaust in terms of power output?

How loud are they actually?

Where they should be placed? before or after cat etc

Exhausts annoy me so any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

If its what Im thinking of....I think they were a gimmick originally intended for hot rods and stuff...

How do they compare with a proper sports exhaust in terms of power output?

Most modern engines need a proper system to work properly.

How loud are they actually?

In the open setting....bloody loud (they'd earn you a yellow sticker for sure)

Where they should be placed? before or after cat etc

After the cat I'd assume....

Exhausts annoy me so any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

If exhaust noise bugs you....I wouldn't bother....you'll hate it.

:stupid: I think they are called varex? might be ok for the track but pretty much would sound like an exhaust with no muffler at all. Edited by fordriver1

Only cars that should have them are V8's.

Just like this one.......

Dunno how they would work with the Turbo's though.

You would need a tune for full exhaust and another for the cutouts yeah?

its not just a sound thing though. surely more power would be made bypassing the mufflers?

The ones I have seen are in the rear muffler and just allow it to pass straight through rather than through the baffling. Some subies have them standard and it is opened by a certain percentage of throttle.

The later BOSS and the new SC V8 FPV's all have the bimodal exhaust that opens up the exhaust went the RPM is over 4,000rpm.

As for the bypass, I used to run a similar thing on my RT Charger when tracking it. It used a cable like the old choke that would divert the exhaust out behind the front door.

Was more of a gimmick than practical as it often jammed and did not make much difference.

As for performance, I doubt it would make a huge difference in comparision to a free flowing sports exhaust.

you mean something like this??

not a ford but sorta thing you were meaning ??

would it be worth doing it on a turbo engine though ??

it would need to be in the tune but if you have a free flowing exhaust what would the difference be

I would recommend them but use the one with a sliding valve in it as apparently it seals better than the one with a butterfly type valve.

I have a 4" down pipe which splits into two 3" pipes. One pipe goes to the 3'' exhaust to the rear and the other is meant to be connected to one of these butterflys that can be programmed to open under boost. I just havent got around to connecting it completely but have made provision for it. The exhaust will dump just under the drivers seat.

Go for it. You could use the original exhaust and just make a new downpipe to take advantage of the extra flow.
