Oil Catch Can

I had plain filter breathers on my supercharged xr8 and it used to smoke like a little chimney through them when on the dyno giving it a nut full.

The standard setup from capa just had one side vented and the other back into the intake which under boost was pushing boost through the crankcase! I know 10psi is not much but it was enough to force oil out the one side.

Another funny thing was that when I finally did close off the intake and add another breather to the drivers side rocker cover the car used to stall more often than before but no more oil in the intake as I had what I thought was alot of oil just sitting in the plenum but v8 owners said it was normal!

my old setup on the EF... there's no new photos due to the fact I have to relocate the catch can due to the Plenum

used teflon/stainless braided lines for the hoses :)

I owned a skyline that I ran a catch can on and I just vented it to atmosphere, through a small filter which I'm pretty sure made it legal. The main reasons I vented to atmosphere for is 1. sometimes the catch can won't catch everything and this oil vapour mixed can cause detonation and when plumbed in before the intercooler or turbo, can sometimes accumulate in the intercooler itself, 2. (this one depends on where its plumbed in also) if or when for some, your engine lets go under boost the blowby will pretty much push a sh1tload of oil out the breather and go into the turbo\intercooler\engine and cause more drama(bend tubo blades etc). I vented mine to atmosphere to hopefully avoid some of this. It is important though when running a vent to atmosphere setup that after the catch can a filter of some type is used as when the engine is under vacuume it will be sucking a small amount of air in also and you don't want crap getting in with your cams. Keeps the cops happy too. RB engine is a bit different but the same principles are still there. If anyone wants a pic I could probably put a couple up.

If I am wrong by the way, I am happy to be corrected!

Yeah Smitty, it would be great to see some of those pics. Im sure we could adapt it to suit our current rides and as you say, the same principles are there.

very good and detailed walkthrough mate, thanks for that, I installed my can a couple of weeks ago but instead of making a new bracket I bent the one that came with it and just drilled a few extra holes, mounts in the same place as yours, mint!

Imagine if there was no outlet for the vapours Ben, it would build up pressure and put strain on things - hence reducing HP. With the recycling effect, it takes away this pressure and also lubricates the turbo (if plumbed in before the turbo)

that's how I understand it anyway... <img src="https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/uploads/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dontknow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":spit:" border="0" alt="dontknow.gif" />

" also lubricates the turbo (if plumbed in before the turbo) "

Which part of the Turbo would that be ?????????????????????

:roflmbo:

So....

Is it better to:

1. have a catch can with a breather - and in this case you take the PCV outlet and pipe to the can and block the outlet to the plenum.

2. have a sealed catch can and send the outlet back to the plenum?

On Ebay etc there seems to be the two types - vent and non vent.

In New Zealand it isnt illegal to have external vents, so... which am I better off with?

Awesome write up! Exactly what I was looking for, a bit of visual guidance with installing a catch can.

Although, this write shows the pipe centre most of the rocker cover beingg fed to the catch can...what of the pipe to the rear most of the rocker cover, or is this pipe best to be left alone??

Cheers
