Hey Guys,

Recently when driving the T, if I take off and get up over about 3000 to 3200 revs there is a clicking sound coming from the turbo, sounds like metal on metal. I've had the front pipe of too look at the turbine, it all looks ok, but it has a tiny bit of forward backward movement, and alot of up down movement, but not enough for the fins to touch the sides, and no grooves or anything to make you think they been hitting the sides. any ideas? bearings?

cheers in advance,

Daniel.

How warm is the car when your driving? As in does it occur when you've just started driving in the morning when the car is just warming up or does it occur no matter how warmed up the engine is?

When I dont warm up my car enough and I give it abit I get a 'wierd' sound also, coming from the turbo area... One the car is at proper operating temps its all sweet...

Seems to happen all the time. no idea if its pinging, sound like its coming from the turbo, or atleast on the turbo side, but its a constant clicking at high revs, and is consistent, same spacing between the sounds, probably about 150 beats a min if that helps. if it was pinging what other signs would there be? really hope it isn't

if u use anything less that 98 ron try a tank of 98 ron

u will soon know if its pinging cause that will fix it.

good luck

p.s I wouldnt have thought the turbo should have any movement up or down, forward and back is probably normal, I have a turbo guy around the corner from work, ill ask him what he recons and see if he has come across it before, but try the fuel to eliminate ping

I took a mate for a ride who knows a bit about turbos, admittedly he's from the subaru side of the fence, but he said it definately doesnt sound like pinging. I use Shell V-Power all the time. After reading Mika's post I went for a drive and baby'd it for about 20mins, in traffic, suburban streets, and crusing at 100 on the highway. After that I gave it a kick in the guts, from 0 to about 150 and there was no sound at all, I did this 3 or 4 times with the same result. I'm thinking maybe the turbine is loose and makes a metal on metal noise when its cold, and it stops when the car warms up and the turbine is slick with oil. Sound possible? should the turbine move? the mate I took for a drive said he thought it shouldn't move and that maybe it had done a bearing, I have no idea though. thanks for your help guys

If you had a loose turbine it would come loose once an once only before chaos ensured. There is a small amount of movement radially and axially in the bearings and as long as the compressor wheel doesn't come into contact with the housing you will be fine. Are you sure your not hearing the wastegate sole oid click as it pulls the boost into check when your giving it a bootful?

hey hiddeous, what does the solenoid sound like? what I've described? constant clicking until backing off, kind of like an open drum roll? it is possible coz its got a 10psi generic tune and a wog cooler and was running about 12.5psi when dyno'd
