  5. Who quoted you $330 in Cairns mate? I have the three generic tunes (6,8 & 10psi) on the CAPA tuner and while it did increase the overall HP, it's caused other problems, e.g. small backfires (even with regapped plugs) and launching hard out of corners can sometimes bring the car to a standstill. I run it on 10psi now but desperately want to get a new custom tune at around 15 - 18 psi (depending on what the tuner suggests is safe with my current setup) and hopefully eliminate the generic tune issues. If I can get a couple of new tunes for $330 a piece I'll jump on it.
  6. The entire line was solid (except the ends so you can't pick it up visually - you MUST do a fluid test). We cut it in half and mounted it on my new mechanics wall with the 2 busted turbos as a warning to people who think cheap oil is a good way to save money on servicing. Only had 55000 km's on it when she died the first time. Replaced the oil supply screen twice. New oil screen or not, 3 services/14000km's driving with crap oil will still kill the mighty Garrett eventually.
  7. Just fitted the Turbosmart Kompact Supersonic in about 30 minutes. Seeing I've rarely swung a spanner in my life...prefer to leave it to pro's...I'm happy with the result, sounds good, goes better, $300 well spent. Now I'm going to crack open a carton of Jimmies (which I bought with the money I saved installing the BOV myself) and sit back watching the V8 Supercars for the rest of the day.
  8. Just a quick update. I ended getting an aftermarket GCG option through TWEAKIT.com for about $2K which lasted one 500km trip before it also blew. Can't fault Tweakit or GCG, rather it was the oil supply line which was almost completely blocked with solid carbon stemming from 3 services using mineral oil instead of full synthetic. After the first service I realised something wasn't right but believed a new mechanic when he attributed it to problems with a recent tune, very expensive lesson regarding loyalty ensued. (NOTE: Tip to everyone who hates spending money unnecessarily. Do not trust or remain loyal to a workshop just because of previous high standards. If they replace a mechanic, check the new blood out for yourself and don't just assume the boss has employed someone equally as good as the person he replaced...Cost of this lesson to me - $6500. Cost of this advice - Free to the Ford faithful in the hope you don't also get burnt). Can't blame my new mechanic who tested the line on advice from GCG with an air flow test prior to fitting the replacement turbo. This guy is a one man operation, and is worth his weight in gold. When this brand new turbo blew 400km's from home, he paid for the tow home, bought all new replacement parts (inc. another turbo) fitted the lot for free and completed a full service. It should be noted that he consulted experts at GCG re: testing everything prior to fitting the new parts originally, however acknowledges he should have completed a fluid flow test in addition to the air flow test to ensure everything was in order. Anyway hope this helps anyone caught out in similar circumstance in future. (To reiterate, know your own car, demand the best and have it evidenced, don't find a good workshop and stick with them, find a AAA mechanic and follow him wherever he goes). Thanks for all the help guys. P.S. By the way just in case you're wondering, the aftermarket GCG Garrett turbo replacement goes great. Spools up much quicker, and though top end does lack a little compared to the factory option...I need power off the line more often than I need grunt at 250kph+ so it doesn't really phase me.
  9. does anyone know how much for the full assembly and can they be bought after market or only from ford. lost the original turbo after 55000km due to a new mechanic using low quality oil, so not taking any chances this time by simply cleaning the oil supply screen.
  10. Thank you very much guys, that's a much more affordable option. I'll make some enquiries on Monday. Will post again once she's finally repaired.
  11. My turbo's also just packed it in after 55000 k's, only 3.5 years old. Anyone know what the 2004 BA Mk1's part number is and where to get it. Not buying anything direct from Ford as they've screwed me throughout the warranty period so any suggestions as to who else supplies them and average price would be appreciated. Been quoted $4200 just for the turbo (excluding labor) from Trinity Ford in Cairns for a Garrett GT40 but after reading numerous forum posts I've noted that it may actually be a GT3540 I need. Can anyone clarify which one is standard for this model, as I want her back on the road a.s.a.p. with the same model as was factory fitted. (No guesses please, I need the exact part) If it is the GT3540, is the one listed here http://www.driftbitz.com/products/Turbos/indexx.htm the one I need. GARRETT GT3540 BALL BEARING RATED AT 600HP 1.02 A/R exhaust housing and 0.70 A/R compressor cover. Base flange is a T3 pattern. Garret's GT series Turbocharger range are safe to run at 20psi + day in and day out. Price: $2,500 inc GST Thanks in advance guys
