Hey guys. Any thoughts on this one before I book it in or get dirty?

This morning my BA XR6T (sedan, A4) started making a clunking in the rear. Seems like the left, but pretty hard to tell.

Gets louder and faster with speed, so seems to be something that rotates. Becomes noticeable about 30 kph or so. Does it turning left, turning right and straight ahead.

Is still there if I lift off the accelerator, however it becomes much quieter or goes away if I shift into neutral and coast.

Really came out of nowhere too - one minute it was fine, next minute it was noisy.

I'm thinking a half shaft or wheel bearing, but seems odd that it started so quickly.

Just got the call - diff is done and needs to be overhauled.

They reckon a tooth broke off something and will be about $2.5k. They are going to give me some options when I pick it up.

Will start some research.

Yeah could be, except I need the car! Need to look into all the options, but going second hand etc doesn't really seem worth it - should do it properly if I'm investing that much time or money.

Cars, hey.

At the risk of a knee-jerk reaction, $9k on car sales gets you a stock July 07 BF with 146k on it and a ZF.

Could nick the exhaust, wideband and new turbo out of mine, take my time chucking in a new diff centre and then sell it...

Thanks mate.

Yeah I'm open to options now, as the mechanic wants the car for a week, so doing it myself is therefore more viable.

Trying a few other places too.

Edit: should I fit a single spinner for safety guys?
