I enjoy playing games set in dark environments, so lights off gaming is a bit of a thing for me.  Backlit keyboard dimmer dial FTW.  Could not handle having the wall/case glowing at me when I'm trying to spot the bad guys hiding in shadows, but other than that cool lighting!

We found our receipt for th elap top and it's covered by our extended warranty we got........YA!! 

I've ask for then to do data recovery because there is some stuff I didnt get time to back up yet. This is at a cost if it can be done.

My question is how much is a reasonable price for this?

If the drive mechanics are fine and it's just a corrupt file (which it sounds a lot like or you wouldn't get much at all on the screen aside from BIOS) then you could just get them to take the drive out and place it in an external caddy for you.  Worst case scenario if they have to disassemble the laptop to remove, that's maybe two hours including putting it back together again with a new drive (but not installing Windows yet).  

 

If the HDD is easily accessible you can get it into an eternal caddy in like five minutes!

 

 

BUT

 

If the drive is physically failing in a big way and refuses to read when connected to another PC, true forensic data recovery can range into the many thousands of dollars.

 

Each model is different but here's the first example of a quick job I could find.

Thanks Steve I do agree and think it's more of a file error. I'll wait for the phone call from them and I'll use fancy computer talk to hopefully get them thinking I know my sh1t about computers.

I dont want to touch anything because im sure it will void my warranty.

The repaid post envelop wont come till next week so could takes a few weeks.

If you really want the files I'd get them copied off first.  Have heard of people losing entire drives worth of data thanks to manufacturer repair centre monkeys.

Hmmm freaking me out know steve. Might leave a note on the inside so when open they will see it, with attached photo that I took so they know.

Just sayin...the files are the most important part to the owner...but not necessarily the repair guy!

 

Everyone needs a friend who is good at IT these days for situations like this.

Agreed........ If it was out of the warranty period I would send it to one of the many good forum IT member's for help and would be more happy to cover cost.
