fg calipers on a ba

Hey guys, a while ago I bought some complete fg struts for cheap and tried to put on the brakes onto my ba mk1. Everything fit fine but when I went for a test drive, there was hardly any (if at all) brake force being applied to the front wheels. I bled the lines twice and checked for leaks and still nothing, but then I noticed the pistons in the fg calipers seemed to have more volume inside them than the ba's if that makes any sence. My question is, to run the fg brakes would I have to change the booster or the abs distribution block or both? And is the any benefit in doing so? At the moment I just have the bigger rotors from the fg with the stock ba calipers. Cheers for any help

The calipers are almost the same but are not a straight easy swap.

Basically they are reversed, BA L is the FG R etc.
The FG has the calipers on the back side of the disc, the B series on the front side. The hose connections don't line up either but you could adapt them I guess.

The BA slide bolt and saddle etc are a straight swap.

Did your BA have standard 298mm discs? And was the upgrade to 322mm (FG XR6T or XR8) and your transferred discs and calipers to the BA?

I've been looking into something similar for my BA and I believe the following is true (for standard only, not premium options):

All BAs had 298mm discs regardless of model

Non-XR6T/Xr8 BF and FG also had 298mm discs

XR6T and Xr8 BF and FG (and all Territory too I think) had 322mm discs.

Caliper and pads identical between 298mm and 322mm discs (except for L/R swap for FG)

BUT 322 caliper have different support brackets so that the caliper clears the disc. So matching support brackets with discs is the key compatibility issue.

By brackets I mean:

So if you swapped whole caliper (including brackets) and discs over you should be fine for fitment.

I thought about getting the Ebay brackets so I can get the bigger discs next time, but am a bit apprehensive about bolting my brakes together with some brackets where I don't know the quality.

Someone with more knowledge might be able to confirm what I've said.

But if you fitment is ok and definitely no air in system, are your pads and rotors clean and not contaminated with grease or dirt from install?

yeah I think that's right, it did originally have the 298mm and I upgraded to 233mm from the fg. You can just use the caliper brackets from FG it bolts straight on and the Ba calipers bolt straight through that, so that's what I did. Just wondering is its worth upgrading to the FG calipers as well

Good stuff - what you have done is exactly what I thought from what I've read, but never quite saw any first hand advice of doing it.  I reckon I might buy some 2nd hand calipers to swap the brackets over (next time I need new rotors) or buy now and recondition with seals, paint etc so they are ready to go.

 

My understanding is that there is no difference to the caliper itself and so running what you currently are (bigger rotors, FG brackets, BA calipers) is perfect.  But I haven't done it, so someone else might know more.

 

It is hard to think what else it might be causing the problem if its definitely not a leak or air.  Obviously not booster as you are fine with the BA calipers.  Maybe the pistons in the FG calipers aren't moving properly?

Agree with the last paragraph above.  If you fitted the FG calipers and rotors to the car and then there was no brake force, but no air in lines or other issues that would stop pressure being pushed through to the caliper, I'd wonder if the caliper is faulty somehow.  Or the lines if you swapped the FG lines over when you did the first fit up.

 

Really though, if it was me and the caliper wasn't working I'd have been straight off to a brake specialist.  Don't like the idea of having brakes in the car that I'm not 100% convinced are operating normally.  Guessing at things from advice given on a forum where we aren't experts PLUS aren't there in person is a bad idea in my opinion!

 

If the FG set are off the car you might be able to get them tested easily, not sure though.

What's wrong with forum advice? It's pretty clear from his description that he needs new diff bushes and his turbo is too noisy.

Yeah but I figured he'd already replaced those :) 

 

Seriously though the forum is awesome for heaps of info and there are some people on here I'd consider experts in many aspects, brakes included.
