Hopefully this is a quick one. I couldn't find anything via search. Probably Tapatalk.

I'm due to replace my tailshaft centre bearing as mine is tearing. My question is, should I go with a genuine Ford item for $200+ or am I okay to go with an eBay job for $70 odd? Has anyone used one of these cheaper items?

Thanks!

It depends of your centre Uni can be removed

Some are press fitted some are held by circlip

I'll try get a pic and post it so you know what I mean

Pretty sure ford don't sell them either, they will say replace the whole shaft

This is the pressed in style Uni

Can't be done at home by the average DIY'er

Have to take it to a driveshaft shop

But if it's held in by circlip a you can replace it yourself,

best to replace the Uni at the same time as the centre bearing

^^^ this.....I got a free one cause mine was missing I think?

Don't get me to explain this one, cause I just went a long with it (maybe service guy was referring to something that holds the centre in place or IDK?)....he suggested I may have had an upgraded shaft at one stage, but I definitely remember the key words "it was missing" and they cannot order the part on its own, so whole TS replacement occurred :P

@JETURBO, I went to buy a new one, apparently they have 2 sizes for the FG, 30mm and 35mm. Any idea what one I need? '08, first of the FG's.

Take the car to Hardy Spicer in Welshpool.  They'll figure it out, and you can buy the replacement centre bearing while you're there.

Or, just take the tail shaft there.

It's all over the place mate with the turbo series

measure twice buy once is the only way

Did Ford regularly use 30mm centre bearings on Turbos and XR8s?
