a mate runs a car pc in his 4x4 with an i5 and a big ssd, thing runs quick but fans are loud when under load (hes crazy and 'needed' the i5 lol). I remember a lot of stuffing around to get everything to work 100% from a software perspective. Once it all works it's pretty dammed cool. It was so funny when bluetooth audio streaming wouldn't work from his android but worked fine from my iphone :P  It has FM/GPS/bluetooth/4G internet.

One important thing is the computers power supply, I can't remember but it was specifically for car computer use because a cars voltage/etc can fluctuate I believe.

I wanted to do this to my old BA cause it had the premium ICC but never got around to it due to the fact the ICC's screen is really low resolution and I also liked to shred tyres so the car spent plenty of time at the mechanics.

definitely do a write up on what you've done My_XR6_Turbo, your experience will help others.

Step 1) First follow this site and connect up your VGA to CGA converter:

https://nerdlyf.wordpress.com/2013/07/14/connecting-a-computer-to-the-icc-wiring-info/

Step 2) Hock up the 12V-5V converter to a constant power supply under dashboard and join the other end to the wire that came with the converter.

Step 3) Shielded Sound Cable
Connecting to the Aux connector, the sound comes out through the Premium Sound System when the am button is pressed twice.

  • It should be 2 core shielded / screened - (has a metal sheath that surrounds the inner wires)
This sheath is used to "screen out" any electrical noise from the wires and signal carried within the cable.

  • As shown in fig.1, Sense - Gnd - Shield  are all connected together to the shield of the twin core cable to prevent electrical interference.
The Right and Left are then each connected to the 3.5mm stereo plug. The other end is then connected to the AP1761 Aerpro plug which has a couple of pins missing. These can be obtained from the 10 pin plug that comes with it.  Just cut them out, and push them into the missing pins.
The aux white plug is located behind the fuse panel as also shown in fig.1a

  • Parts required are a 3.5mm stereo plug, Aerpro AP1761 plug and 2m of 2 core screened audio cable.

  • Don't use an amplified unit as it will only amplify the engine whine no matter how low the volume is.
  • Audio.gif

Step 4) install a fresh copy of Windows on your laptop and install the GPS and Bluetooth adapter

Step 5) Install Kodi https://kodi.tv/download

Step 6) Download CarPC Add-on http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=225688

Step 7) Do a google for IGO8 for PC. It’s the best navigation software I could find for Windows. You will find the app and maps very easy.

Step 8)if you have an android phone download on your phone and your laptop “remote Phone” from www.justremotephone.com This will allow you to answer calls and reply to SMS’s.

Step 9) you will need to edit a file called includes.xml to point the navigation button to the location of your IGO install.

Step 10) install everything into your glovebox.

Step 11) use the menu on the VGA to CGA converter to change the contrast as the white will be overpowering.

I currently use the mini remote to control the laptop as I haven’t got around to installing the touch screen.

Here is a write up half way down the page on installing the touch screen. As I haven’t done it I’m not much help with that.  https://www.hardanswers.net/ba-bf-falcon-custom-carputer-install

I mounted 2 switches under the dash. 1 turns the screen from the standard ICC to the laptop. The other switch turns the laptop on and off. To do this you will need to remove the screws from the laptop and solder 2 wires to the mainboard where the switch goes then run these wires under the dash to the drivers side.

I have connected the laptop to the home wireless so once I get home I can connect to the laptop using Teamviewer and make changes to it and I can also copy across movies and tv shows to it.

If you tether the laptop to your phone you can get live weather while you drive.

If you install Windows 10 there are a few programs in the app store you can download that will connect to an OBDII adapter which will give you live data.

I also found this software that looks great but the gauges maybe too small for the ford ICC.

If you need more details let me know. In the end it was a really easy setup that can be done over a weekend.

Now I have something to look forward to in Melbourne standstill traffic.

Awesome write up mate. I have a lenovo netbook sitting at home that would be ideal for this. I think I need to pull my finger out.

Any idea if front and rear cams could be incorporated? Obviously usb cams are easy but how would you go about activation the rear cam when selecting reverse?

Also anychance you could throw up some pics of your working setup?

A switch mounted on the reverse selector would be pretty simple if you could connect it to a Raspberry Pi... not so easy on a regular laptop...
