that's what I mean, though... it's just too subjective (the ability to hear and judge tone etc). I think of "understanding" as being measureably competent at either criticising or performing, in this case. :)

The ability to hear and judge isn't subjective, Keith. Unless you're completely tone deaf then you should be able to tell the difference between different notes and whether or not they're in tune or not. There's reference frequencies to define what's "in tune", so not subjective at all.

I was teaching my wife to recognize a note and copy it yesterday.

She started out by singing every note a fifth apart from me no matter where I went.

It was hilarious to me at least that she could harmonize without being able to sing a nursery rhyme in tune.

It took us just a few minutes to get her to hit the same note as me. Then she cracked the sh*ts and walked away.

Learning new things can be like that I guess.

Human based measurements are subjective by nature. This is just an unavoidable fact. Everybody has a different auditory system, even if only minutely different; so "experience/perception" of sound is unique and specifically your own, hence it's subjective.

If you were measuring using sensitive recording equipment (both hardware and software) then I would be able to say it's objective.

I just actually can't be farked arguing with you about something that you, again, don't have any real world experience with.
