HI all, long time reader - first post!

I am contemplating the purchase of an early XR6-T for a development project and, from the many many posts here, the 4 speed auto is a throw away item once average to serious power is applied....

My question is, does anyone have info or advice on converting to a ZF 6-speed auto, or should we just slot in a beefed up C4? I would like to retain the electroic box for tuning purposes BUT there are hundreds of sub-10 second drag cars out there that have no reliability issues with a properly built C4.

Thoughts, advice and first hand experience welcome!

BTW I have read Ninka's conversion post and whilst it is completely do-able, expensive and the results seem amazing - my question is more about the transmission's ability to reliably cope with big power and abuse (drag racing)

Cheers

Thanks for your feedback guys - this is just what I was looking for...

What type of box are the 400+ cars running usually? (if modifed ZF, what do they upgrade internally)

Has anyone seen / heard of / own an XR6-T with a C4?

Thanks for your answers!

the 9.9 sec car was running some some kind of 3 speed

a lot of the other cars run the 4 speed but they tend to break after a while but are far cheaper to rebuild then a ZF

also a lot of high power cars are the manual T56

a member - TWEAKN - has a Turbo 400 3spd installed by CV, I don't think he has gotten it on the track yet, but he seems to love it!

Yeah, there is something about smashing each gear with a ratchet shifter you just can't get with tiptronic or manual shifters... Think I will look into C4 - need something dependable and abuseable
