Fg Xr6t Owners ex T owner thinking about getting back into one

hey guys, its been 3 years now since i had my ba auto T. since then ive gone through an s15 and am currently driving a rex, however im looking at getting into a new car around march next year.
the cars on my short list atm are the VW Golf GTI (DSG - with staff discount) and the FG XR6T (ZF). Im currently in a 2005 rex which i hope to offload by this time.
I estimate a budget of 50k max but would prefer to spend closer to the 45 mark.
what are your opinions on the new FG. im hoping to get the lux pack fitted as well and drive the car home for about 48k with the zf (how much have you been picking up your cars for?)
Things important to me in a car are : build quality, fuel economy, low end power (for city driving). ive owned a tuned T before so i know its going to be heavier on fuel than the gti, but the gti is also a lot smaller.
thanks guys,
John
p.s. anyone owned both a gti and an fg? i work with vw so i know pretty much everythign about the gti, but would like to hear from someone who drives one on a daily basis

i got my fg with lux pack, tech pack, dash colour, zf6, spare alloy + scuffs and dash mat for 45k drive-away in melb. i got quoted around 53k + onroads for all of that from another dealer i laughed in there face lol coz i knew i could get it cheaper if i looked around more.
though my fg is practically a weekender i do drive it around the city frequently and i get around 11.6/100 city driving. which isnt too bad i reckon, the power is certainly there when you want it, almost non stop boost its freaking awesome. as for build quality, i havent found/experienced anything wrong with my fg at all yet ive only clocked up 1660kms so its probably expected to not find anything yet. id go for the fg superior car, but if your on a budget look into the long run of the costs of running such a car, probably end up going the GTI cause of the petrol and probably maintenance cost in the future will be cheaper for the GTI rather than the FG(since its gona be swapped to a v6, the I6 parts are probably gona be more expensive for it if anything go's wrong)...your choice, but id go the T just for the thrill of owning a great car

wow 45 on the road is an amazing price optioned up like that. i work for vw so with staffies i can pick up a 3dr gti with leather and roof for around that money too. but i cant justify spending so much on a tiny car like that.
switching to a v6 huh? anyone know reasons behidn the move?
gti servicing costs are roughly 2500 over 4 years but its only serviced once a year/every 15 000kms. ill be doing my own oil changes inbetween services regardless of which i choose though. anyone know the service costs on an xr?
i loved the power of my xr, and i only realised what a great car it was till after i got rid of it.

I too looked at the GTI and R32 before buying my FG. I think the Golf would be a good little performer around the city with great economy and reasonable resale. But for me the deciding factors were the FG XR6T has bulk power compaired to the Golf and plenty more room to fit people in and interior options. Disadvantages for the XR is more fuel costs, bad resale and maybe a little less build quality, not that I've had any issues with mine so far.
Oh and one more advantage for the FG is 300rwkw with injectors and a tune. Gotta be happy with that.

FG XR6T, ZF6, Winter White, Lux Pack, Tech Pack, Tint, Tein Coilover Suspension, Brake Upgrade, Trans Cooler, Oil Cooler, Nizpro Injectors, Nizpro Intercooler, Dump Pipe + Cat, 340rwkw - 884nm, Tuned by Tunehouse.

and then theres the argument for FG xr6 vs BF2 F6.
similar price range.
what would you take? are the new FG's 6T the same body as the new FG F6? (i.e. can you simple change bumper bars on them? lol)

for resale value the bf2 phoon will most likely be the best option over the fg in the future, reason being its a FPV. i would still go for the FG, has more power potential and i reckon the design is quite nice but theres HEAPS of people out there that think its gone back to the AU look, though i dont see a resemblance or am i just blind?
either way, fg would be the go over the bf2 phoon for me basically coz of power potential/easier user controls/good handling/slicker look.
i would also like to know abot the bumper bar change i like the raccoon eyes for some reason :D

I checked out the GTI before I bought my FG T and thought it was a good little package, however doing mainly highway driving I went for FG. Having had a BA XR8 which I did a few mods on and a BFII Typhoon, I can say that I am really enjoying the FG more than those cars. Nice and practical functionality, got everything I wanted for it and haven't looked back.
I loved the Typhoon, but when my wife started a new job she had to start doing 150km a day for work, and that took my leasecar (ML Triton) off me to get me out to my work and back, and the roads to the mine and back aren't real flash, and rather than seeing the Typhoon get bashed around, I sold it.
However, if I had the choice again between the BFII Typhoon and the FG XR6T, I think I would go with the FG still. It hasn't got "FPV" written on it, but at the end of the day, a car is what you make it, so do a few minor mods and have it putting out as much power as the FG 'phoon if thats what you are looking for.
Getting back to your question, though I haven't done much driving in the GTI, I couldn't really justify spending so much on a little car. Maybe if 95% of my driving was in the city or built up areas I would have considered it, though there is the XR5 Focus to compete with it there... :3gears:

thanks for the replies guys. the interior of the fg sure does look nicer then the ba/bf. a bf2 phoon would be good just for the namesake of having one. but from the figures and my little research on the fg the xr6t is as quick as the old phoons were!
golf gti is a great car too, and probably a lot better on fuel especially in stop start traffic. i think the resale would be better too as the next car i buy i will be holding it for 3 years min. that said the xr6 is probably a more practical car in the long term and something i could easily make feel new again with a few mods.
have they fixed the diff clunk problems they were having in the ba's? ill be going auto so that rules the xr5 out.

haha good on you! fords the way.
tech pack basically includes i-pod compatibility, theres a cable you connect the ipod to and it brings up all the music info on the screen and u just control it with steering wheel/ICC. also tech pack has blutooth - supports bunch of phones and the list is still growing (from sennaT ) shows your contacts on the screen when they call and u can answer through steering wheel.
as for your wish list there, i think its possible specially now with petrol prices being so high and all majority of people are ignoring sedans especially turbos/v8's so im sure if you go to a couple of dealers theres someone desperate enough to get a sale that'll just say f*ck it and give it to you for a very decent price, i would expect 45-48k from a decent dealer. as i said earlier i scored mine for 45k drive-away but i didnt mention it was a private buy also. good luck buddy hope it all go's well,
EDIT: also check around some dealers cars in stock - some of them have features such as lux pack and selling for about 43k driveaway, which is a pretty good deal all you'd have to do is tell them u want the rest of the stuff on your list and they'll add it on most likely end up costing you about 45k either way just make sure you take gooooood long hard looks around the dealer and ask for as many price quotes you can get

hmm bluetooth sounds good but dont need the ipod. also noticed theres an option for a trans cooler! i know when im ready to buy i should be able to get something around the 45k mark with the options that i want.
how long does delivery take for an fg? the vw take about 6 months!
anyone noticed any common faults in the fg's as yet? such as the diff clunk in the ba's. or more annoyingly the seatbelt wearing into the guider on the drivers side.

i saw the option for trans cooler i dont really know what the hell it does lol so i didnt order it. took me 6-7 weeks to get it to my dealer ready for pickup.
no faults for me yet havent heard any clunks - smooth as car. the seatbelts fine for me? never owned a ba/bf before so i wouldnt have a clue if its any different.

havent heard of anything like that being added to the ba/bf's from factory or as an added option from a ford dealership. BUT you can always ask ASL they are really good with all the techy gadget stuff that ford brings out and they install it on peoples cars for what seems a very decent price compared to dealerships.

I know it is a little off topic but can you get this tech pack for a BA/BF?
In the BA's you could get a Prestige Pack.
It was Dual Zone Climate Control, Prestige Leather (Suede Circles and leather sides), Auto Lights and you could also get Auto Pedals.

Yeah my FG took about 5 weeks to be delivered, but might be a bit quicker if you live in a built up area. Tranny cooler would be good if you are doing a lot of towing, couldn't really see a need for it otherwise...unless you are pretty harsh on the gear lol
